The Schoolwear Show Review

The Schoolwear Show took place across two days in October

Another successful year T

Mark Woolgar, one of the directors of The Schoolwear Show, shares his thoughts on the biggest event in the schoolwear calendar, which took place last month.

he 2024 Schoolwear Show, held at AIS in Solihull, marked another successful year for the schoolwear industry, bringing together retailers, suppliers, and industry professionals from across the UK.

This year’s event, held on October 6 and 7, was particularly notable for its growing sense of optimism among attendees. Despite the economic challenges of recent years, there was a renewed confidence in consumer spending, which bodes well for the future of the industry. The show featured a diverse range of exhibitors, from established names like Trutex, Banner and David Luke to newer entrants making their mark in the industry. The variety of products on display, from traditional school uniforms to modern, sustainable options, highlighted the industry’s adaptability and commitment

to meeting the evolving needs of schools and parents.

A sense of concern

However, amidst the positivity, there was also a sense of concern regarding the upcoming Children’s Wellbeing Bill. The new Labour government has proposed legislation that could potentially restrict the number of school-specific uniform items, aiming to reduce costs for families and promote inclusivity. While the intentions behind the bill are commendable, many in the industry are worried about its potential impact on their businesses.

The Schoolwear Association, representing the interests of the industry, has been actively engaging with policymakers to ensure that the bill reflects the positive and practical benefits of school uniforms. Uniforms

play a crucial role in promoting equality, reducing bullying, and fostering a sense of community within schools. The association’s efforts to highlight these benefits were a key topic of discussion throughout the show.

A major highlight

The seminar programme at this year’s show was a major highlight, drawing significant numbers and sparking lively discussions. One of the most popular sessions was hosted by WA Comms, the Schoolwear Association’s PR partners. Their seminar provided valuable insights into the actions being taken to influence the Children’s Wellbeing Bill. The presentation emphasised the importance of school uniforms in creating a level playing field for all students and the practical benefits they offer to schools and families.
