The powdered elephant in the room


When it comes to DTF printing, adhesive powder is often overlooked. CEO of Resolute, Colin Marsh has focused this issue’s discussion around how to select the best powder for any job.


D


irect to film (DTF) adhesive powder is a critical part of the transfer process, it forms the bonding layer that fixes the ink to the garment during heat pressing. The powder influences adhesion strength, softness, stretch, durability and suitability for different fabrics.


While most people focus on film and ink, the powder type often determines whether a transfer lasts or fails. The main categories used today are standard powder, low melt powder, super stretch powder and sublimation blocking powder, each designed for specific applications. Particle size, melting range and curing conditions also affect hand feel and performance.


Standard DTF powder


This powder is the most widely used and a good all-round option for everyday production. Suitable for a broad range of fabrics, it provides a reliable balance of adhesion, softness and elasticity. With a particle size of 180 to 300μm, it flows well and is easy to handle in both manual and automated workflows. Its melting point typically falls between 110°C and 140°C, with heat press settings around 1.5 to 2.0 bar for five to 15 seconds depending on the garment.


This makes standard powder a practical default for cotton, polyester blends and mixed garments. Its advantages include versatility, strong bonding and predictable durability. However, it may not be ideal for heat-sensitive fabrics or garments requiring very high stretch performance. Standard powders are generally classed as ‘medium’ grades, distinguished from finer or specialist powders by particle size and melt characteristics.


Low melt DTF powder


This powder is designed for heat-sensitive or problematic fabrics such as sublimated polyester, rain jackets and technical garments. With a smaller particle size of 120 to 250μm and a melting point around 105 to 120°C, it activates at lower temperatures, reducing the risk of fabric distortion, coating damage or dye migration. Low melt powder often produces a softer hand feel, which is beneficial for thin or delicate garments. However, it has limitations: Prints made with low melt powder generally should not be washed above 30°C if long-term quality is a priority. It is often preferred for hand powdering, but it performs best in a controlled DTF finishing unit.


Its strengths are reduced heat exposure, softer feel and improved compatibility with difficult fabrics. Its weaknesses

are lower wash tolerance and a narrower window of use. Low temperature powders are typically recommended when standard formulations risk damaging the garment.


Super stretch DTF powder


Super stretch powder is a newer category aimed at decorators who need exceptional flexibility and a premium soft feel. Its defining feature is high elongation combined with strong recovery, making it ideal for performance wear and garments exposed to repeated movement.


The particles are processed differently from standard powders, often giving them a slightly dull or off-white appearance. This is normal and relates to how the particles fuse during curing to create a highly flexible adhesive layer. Unlike low melt powder, super stretch powder is not designed for low temperature applications; instead, it is a premium option for high comfort, high movement garments.


Its advantages include excellent stretch, soft hand feel and superior performance on flexible fabrics. The main drawbacks are higher costs and very few resellers due to its recent arrival to market in the UK. Super Stretch powder is marketed as a premium solution for sportswear and high-quality retail garment decoration.


Sublimation blocking DTF powder


Sublimation blocking powder addresses the persistent issue of dye migration from sublimated polyester. Earlier versions were often black and relied on additives to absorb or block sublimation gases released during heat pressing. Effective blocking powders must resist dye gas while remaining invisible beneath the white ink layer, especially important for sports shirts with white names or numbers applied over heavily dyed fabrics. Modern blocking systems often combine three elements: a compatible white ink, a suitable film coating and a specialist grey blocking adhesive powder. When used correctly, they can significantly reduce dye migration on difficult polyester garments and soft shell products.


However, performance varies widely. Some garments may appear fine immediately after pressing but show bleed-through days or weeks later. Realistic testing on genuinely challenging substrates is essential before relying on any blocking solution. Anti- sublimation powders are best viewed as specialist tools whose success depends heavily on the full print system and not just the adhesive powder.


Safety and handling


DTF powders should be handled with care, like other industrial situations. Using flour in a bakery requires a simple disposable mask and good ventilation; these are sensible precautions, especially in busy print rooms.
