MARKET REPORT: ASIA PACIFIC
December 2023 with massive marketing campaigns which themselves generated great media buzz. Chimelong opened their long-awaited Marine Science Park in Zhuhai in September 2023. This project is also referred to as the Chimelong Spaceship Aquarium due to its unique ultra-modern style. Covering a massive 400,000 sqm (4 million square feet), the indoor park incorporates over 100,000 marine animals and can accommodate 50,000 visitors at one time.
Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park successfully incorporated new IP in the theme park including One Piece and Ultraman, which received significant attention on social media. This strategy appears to be particularly appealing to family visitors. In Macau, the Londoner Macao opened in May 2023 showing a fresh new look of the Cotai Central area with a new arena and theater. Elsewhere in China, several smaller parks opened including Nantong Sendi Ice and Snow Park and the Dalian Shibeiwan Hotspring Water Park.

In Japan, the Ghibli Theme Park opened in Aichi in November 2022 within Expo 2005 Aichi Commemorative Park. New attractions and areas based on famous Ghibli Studios animations continued to be added to fill out the park and had its first full year of operation in 2023.
Also in Japan, The Making of Harry
Potter Studio Tour opened in Tokyo in June 2023. Located on the former Toshimaen amusement park site, Harry Potter tour was an immediate success and a popular attraction drawing fans from all over Asia. Southeast Asia was relatively quiet with
the exception of Splashmania Waterpark opening in Selangor, Malaysia in February.
Outlook for 2024 While the bounce back in visitation in 2023 was strong, this positive momentum is expected to continue through 2024. Looking ahead, there is great hope that 2024 will be a full recovery year and in fact exceed the records reached in 2019. Although the economy in China is weak, young adults and families still enjoy going out for the day for experiences. Economic growth in Southeast Asia is expected to remain quite strong and the growing middle class is seeking out of home entertainment. Many countries are relaxing visa regulations and with increased flights, the inter-regional travel should pick up and support the regional theme attraction industry. While optimistic, there are still headwinds which will temper growth in the near future.
The economic recovery in Mainland China is relatively weak with stubbornly high levels of youth unemployment (a major visitor segment to the attractions market). The government is promoting domestic consumption with tourism and out of home spending high on the list.
