the shadow of the much larger Shanghai Disney Resort, Shanghai LEGOLAND appears to have found a successful niche audience. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort reported
its best financial year ever (FY2024) with a 54% increase in revenue from the previous year. The World of Frozen, a refreshed castle spectacular show and parade, have continued to pay dividends. This year, Hong Kong Disney celebrates its 20th anniversary with a new parade and entertainment shows. Hong Kong Disneyland is in the midst of a multi-year expansion program and hinted at an upcoming Pixar immersive live performance show, and additions to the Marvel-themed area. Based on this continued investment, Hong Kong Disneyland is poised to go from strength to strength over the next 5 years.
Shanghai Disney Resort reported strong attendance in 2025 but noted challenging economic conditions in China, resulting in slightly lower per capita spending. The Zootopia land continues to be a fan favourite, drawing big crowds every day. Separately, Zootopia 2 movie is proving a monster box office smash in China with US$460 million in box office revenue in just two weeks. Undoubtedly, the highly popular theme park land boosted movie ticket sales, showing that the synergies between media and theme parks go both ways. A new Marvel land, featuring Spiderman, is under construction, along with a fourth theme park hotel. Rumours are that a second gate theme park is under planning for the Shanghai Disney Resort. Universal Studios Beijing introduced major seasonal events for Halloween and Christmas in 2025. As the park has been open for four years without major expansion, attendance has softened in 2025. The contrast between Shanghai
Disney’s aggressive expansions and Universal Studios Beijing’s lack of reinvestment is becoming more notable in the market.
The Chimelong Group opened their third
large-scale themed entertainment and resort complex in Guangdong Province in 2025. Chimelong Qingyuan Resort is located about 1 hour north of Guangzhou city and incorporates an animal and nature-based theme park with themed accommodations. The Forest Kingdom theme park includes animal exhibits, shows, family rides, a kids’ area and nature education experiences. The animal exhibits are well done and unique, while the rides and shows are fairly standard and likely to be upgraded. A large Giraffe theme hotel is very well appointed and entertaining, which is popular for families. The resort complex is huge at some 300 hectares (740 acres) with plenty of room for expansions and upgrades. In their Guangzhou resort complex, Chimelong reconfigured the entrance and added two first-ever waterpark rides and coasters to their global leading waterpark in 2025. Chimelong Paradise theme park installed several new Jinma-built rides. The
third phase of the Chimelong Guangzhou resort has been unveiled, featuring a new major core area with new hotels, retail complexes and indoor attractions. Fantawild continued their rapid pace of
theme park expansion, opening two new theme parks in 2025. Oriental Legend (a Chinese historical theme park) opened in Ziyang, and Boonie Bears Land theme park (Fantawild’s own animation IP) opened in Huaan, Jiangsu Province. Fantawild has emerged as a fully integrated media and theme park company offering turnkey services, including extensive ride manufacturing abilities. IQiyi, the so-called Netflix of China,
broke ground on a cutting-edge media- based theme park in Yangzhou, China (near Nanjing). The theme park is expected to have seven zones, including immersive theatres, holographic spaces, interactive performances, film sets and NPC experiences. IQiyi is integrating technology, Chinese culture, and its extensive portfolio of IP to create a unique entertainment environment. IQiyi has quietly built up its offline entertainment expertise with 40 immersive theatres in 20 cities in China.
