Saludos, Ricki

Ricki Chavez-Munoz reports on what’s happening in South America. I
n our Latam column we pay a heartfelt tribute to Mr. Paul Gauselmann, founder and, for decades, Chairman of the Board of Management of Merkur Group, who passed away on Friday, August 21, shortly before his 92nd birthday. We offer our sincere condolences to his family and all Merkur staff.
Paul Gauselmann was born in Westphalia, Germany, after World War II, and as a young man started a solo business that he later turned into an international Group with more than 15,000 employees and a total turnover of some 2.1 billion euros. For 67 years he shaped the company by also acting as a defender of the German gaming machine industry overall. In 2003 he received the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, and in 2004 he was distinguished as an honorary citizen of the cities of Espelkamp and Lübbecke. Paul Gauselmann leaves behind his wife, Karin, four children, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. As we move on, progress is beginning to take shape in the new Casino Parque Hotel in Uruguay – see note below – a reactivation of work that was stopped owing to contractual differences at Cipriani Ocean Resort and Residences & Casino complex in Punta del Este. A report by Radio Montecarlo, at the end of last August, had statements by Guiseppe Cirpiani, who said that 400 workers were already in place, and that 300 employees were in training to work in the casino, so that a temporary casino facility will open at
Locanda (former Mantra hotel) in time for the next season. Fabulous!
In Chile, meanwhile, lack of bids for the casino permit in Puerto Varas has been a real concern and reciprocal claims between operators and the bidding service do not help the process - see below.
We are about to leave for our yearly pilgrimage to Las Vegas G2E, which begins on Monday 28 and ends on October 1st. Following this, on the 15th we have the GAT Expo Colombia, in Bogotá, and from there, during 19-22 October, the International Association of Gaming Regulators (IAGR) will meet in Lima, Peru with an important conferences programme. See you all, there!
