Editor’s comment

When I was 15 I wrote my fi rst song with a friend called Rick. It was called “The Robots are taking over (baby)”. It was written on a bass drum in the space of one lunch break, which I think gives you all the information you need to imagine the ‘quality’ of that potential 80s chart-topper. As it was, the robots didn’t take over (baby) but their brains are certainly starting to have a serious affect on us. I am, of course, talking about Artifi cial Intelligence (AI). I’ve mostly ignored the impact AI has had on the tech sector

as, though I’m happy to wear a shirt, I have no idea or interest in how it’s made. That’s very much my approach to most things. AI is, however, already affecting the world around us, including the publication you’re reading. I can take a 1,000-word article and ask AI to edit it down to 600 words without losing any of the ‘juice’. It’s not going to produce a fi nished article, but it’ll get me a lot closer with almost no effort from me other than understanding a few key prompts (which you can even ask the AI to generate). Imagery too is going to be much easier to create (you think that greyhound on page 28 is a real photo?). There are other instances of AI-infl uenced content in this issue, but I’m not going to tell you where. I may even have asked AI to write this; you honestly wouldn’t know. Ordinarily I’d end my column with a photo of myself (I know the lady readers LOVE it). However, in keeping with the theme, I tried to describe myself well enough to produce an AI version this month. I learnt three things: 1) AI doesn’t yet know what a ‘goatee beard’ is, 2) I wish I looked like my AI version, and 3) the robots aren’t taking over. Baby.
