INTERNATIONAL Editor’s comment

One thing I have always appreciated about the gambling industry is that it’s always changing. Sometimes though, occasionally even, it’s not change for the better. This morning I was reading Andrew Scott’s recent article from Inside Asian Gaming, about the decline of Macau as the world’s number one gambling hotspot, and its potential permanence. The Chinese government have been red-fl agging for a long, long time with this, and the region is in the perfect storm – licence tenders, COVID shutdown, two years of stagnation. And the Chinese government’s crackdown on travel to Macau from the mainland continues to hurt. It seems the government is doing everything it can to stop the movement of money out of China and its environs. I get it, I really do – however we are existing in a world of multinational companies, global enterprises and if you want an $8bn resort building, well, the people that built it are likely to want some money back at some point. These are businesses wanting to do business, and the government’s insistence on continually upheaving the playing fi eld is baffl ing. Business can still be done, everyone would accept a tax rise if the players are allowed to come, and the casinos are allowed to operate. But the constant, ever-changing hobbling of the industry is bizarre to see, not least because of the amount of tax revenue created, the amount of investment that comes in, and the amount of employment the casinos bring. With licence caveats regarding employing local workers, unemployment in Macau has been mind-blowingly low for years. And those workers can shop, and buy homes, and pay income tax… The more you monkey with the structure of Macau, the greater the fi ssures become. It’s not indestructible, and I suspect Andrew may be right in his article, he breaks it all down very well, and it’s worth seeking it out if you haven’t already seen it. Macau may be in its fi nal throes as the magnifi cent creature we once knew. But Asia as a whole remains vibrant, fascinating and very much alive, thankfully. Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, even India will all benefi t and perhaps the whole continent will enjoy a mature and well-regulated gambling industry before too long.

The king is dead, long live the king.
