Victoria Gate appoints team, trains locals

V

ictoria Gate Casino, the largest casino in the north of England and Scotland, has made its third major appointment, naming John Davies

as Head of Food and Beverage. Mr Davies, who has been in the food and drink

industry for more than 25 years at venues across the UK and Europe, is leading the food and beverage elements at the multi-million pound entertainment and gaming destination. Mr Davies is one of more than 200 staff to be

employed at the new ‘super casino’, which is the third-largest casino in the UK. Mr Davies said: “Food and drink is an integral part of the offering at Victoria Gate Casino – it’s not just about gaming but providing an exciting offering that will entice visitors to have a great casino experience. “Visitors will be coming through the doors purely to

enjoy a meal or a drink so we’ve come up with eye- catching options covering everything from snacks and nibbles to stand-out meals and signature cocktails. “The emphasis is on quality, which is why we’re putting Yorkshire produce at the heart of the menu.” Victoria Gate Casino includes three venues – Live

Bar, Curve and V Restaurant. Previously, the casino’s second major appointment

was Leanne McKenna, Head of Marketing and Customer Experience.

Miss McKenna previously worked as an Electronic

Warfare Specialist in the Royal Navy. Miss McKenna, who is originally from Leeds, said: “My main role in the Royal Navy was to spot enemy ships and manage the radar and sonar equipment. It was an unforgettable experience and I learned so many skills that will be really valuable in my new role.” More than 1,000 people have applied for jobs at the casino and successful applicants have been enjoying training on six-week ‘casino school’ courses. Many of the applicants are local to the casino, demonstrating the company’s commitment to supporting the local economy and sourcing at least 90 per cent of employees from within the region. New casino employees enrolled onto the National Gaming Academy courses – which are being run by staff from Blackpool and The Fylde College and taking place opposite the new Victoria Gate Casino – will finish with a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Gambling Operations. The intensive, 180-hour course covers three main games: roulette, blackjack, and poker, as well as gambling legislation, social responsibility, customer service, health and safety, and odds-based mathematics, all of which will enable employees to provide customers with an efficient and high quality casino experience. Teaching is carried out in person and via the e-learning portal, Moodle.
