Editor’s Letter

What a summer it has been. Sweltering temperatures reaching record highs, a drought in some parts of the UK causing our farmlands to look more like the Australian Outback, and fires so frequent you’d have thought the reckoning was upon us.

Of course it wasn’t, but if it had been, then it would’ve made that random public phone alert a lot more understandable.

But all that has been and gone, and now we welcome a wet but warm September.

There’s so much to look forward to this autumn that we have started the season with a jampacked issue. So with that, please enjoy this edition of Sign Update.

Inside, you will find the usual focus features, which, in this edition, are: a focus on Cutters (page 34), a focus on inks and varnishes (page 46) and a focus on sheet materials (page 54). All of these help readers understand the options available to them in the industry.

Inside is also an in-depth interview with Jonsigns’ estimating and procurement manager, Rob Hogarth, who, after 48 years in the industry, has decided to take a much-deserved retirement. But not before regaling us with his tales, all of which can be found on page 32.

Looking ahead to the end of September, we have a preview of The Print and Sign Show included, as well as discussions from some of the exhibitors, so for any of you potential visitors, turn to page 42 to get ahead of the event.

Last but by no means least are our columns, all written by industry experts, giving you advice on a variety of topics.

We all hope you enjoy this issue, and please feel free to be in touch if you have anything you wish to add for the next one.
