involved but to the industry as a whole.” And it’s not just acquisitions affecting

business, with external factors having an impact. Since the changes in the October Budget

came into effect in Spring, the National Insurance contribution rate increased from 13.8% to 15%, while the National Living Wage increased by 6.7% to £12.21. Tere was also a rise in Employment Allowance, which more than doubled from £5,000 to £10,500, helping the smaller businesses, but medium-sized businesses would be the ones feeling the impact most, with greater costs but no greater financial relief. It would have been thought, therefore,

that all this could have a serious impact on company turnover; however, these early days suggest that, across the board, it has increased. More than half (55%) suggested turnover had increased, with 47% suggesting

the same for their large-format print margins. Yet these increases are seemingly minimal, with the majority (23%) of any growth being less than 10%, while 35% of all respondents say it hadn’t even changed at all. Outside factors, therefore, could be having an impact on the trust of the market, with businesses taking a more methodical, cautious approach to future growth. However, growth is still the main

priority of companies, with 38% focusing on turnover growth and 41% aiming to increase their customer base. Companies, therefore, may need to think outside the box to do this, whether that be joining the race to the bottom, thinking of manufacturing changes to improve efficiency and cut costs, or perhaps looking to new markets to find

new customers; with the last being the preferred choice. Looking back at which sectors are best

provided for, ‘other’ got 28% of the votes. Already quite high, but compared to last year, that is an 18% increase, indicating that some businesses have already started providing services for more niche sections of the industry, and others may look to follow suit. Companies will perhaps look to diversify

their portfolios further and find new revenue streams just to stay in the black, which is what the survey results appear to be indicating. When asked, half of the respondents

(50%) said they would look to diversify their portfolios. One commenter said: “We are winning new business and seeing a lot of interest in what we do.
