Conference targets tool theft issues

Almost three quarters of UK tradespeople have personally experienced tool theft, according to research commissioned by Fix Radio. The survey of 500 tradespeople

found that 73% had experienced tool theft, while 74% said the problem had become more common over the past 12 months. The research also highlights

the low recovery rate for stolen equipment. Among those who

had experienced theft, 65% said none of their stolen tools had been recovered, while just 9% had recovered all of them. The financial and practical impact

can also be significant. Two in five tradespeople who had experienced

To support installers with the transition to

low-carbon heating, discounted heat pump training is also available on Baxi Works along with technical guidance and expert advice. By cutting training costs and providing practical assistance before, during and after installation, Baxi Works helps engineers grow their expertise and confidently approach new business opportunities. theft said they had lost more than £1,000 worth of tools. Four in five reported that the theft had caused at least moderate disruption to their ability to work, while 53% said they had experienced stress or anxiety as a result. The survey also found strong

support for tougher measures. Some 92% backed tighter regulation of the resale of stolen tools, 91% supported stronger penalties for tool theft and 85% wanted vehicle manufacturers to improve van security.

October conference The findings will form part of Fix Radio’s first Tool Theft report, due to be published at its Tool Theft Conference in Birmingham on 22 October. Conducted in

partnership with Wickes TradePro, the conference will bring together industry stakeholders to examine issues including forensic marking, insurance for the construction trades, improved security, regulation of the second-hand tool market and the human impact. “Overall, the

industry

response remains piecemeal and fragmented,” says Louis Timpany, CEO and founder of Fix Radio. “Our conference wants to bring together key stakeholders, such as insurers, van makers and tool brands, along with tradespeople and police, to develop measurable steps to combat tool thieves.”
