Trying to think ahead

You might think that this month’s front cover story ‘Homeowners unprepared for a boiler breakdown’ is about as earth-shattering as a study concluding that it’s cold in the North Pole or President Trump has a loose relationship with the truth. However, while the Which? survey might not have provided any startling revelations, it does help to highlight one of the major obstacles to the more widespread adoption of low-carbon heating solutions – a replacement boiler is more often than not a distress purchase. Naturally enough, when their boiler has stopped working,

consumers don’t want to waste time weighing up the relative benefi ts of potentially costly alternative technologies, they just want their heating back up and running as quickly as possible. When speed is of the essence, putting another white box on the wall, ideally in the same place as the old one, is very likely to represent the least disruptive and most economical option. So what can be done about that? Ensuring that homeowners

are better informed about heat pumps before their existing fossil-fueled system reaches the end of its life seems like an obvious strategy, but how many consumers really want to start thinking about their heating systems any sooner than they have to? Unfortunately, unlike a potential bathroom or kitchen refurbishment project, the future overhaul of a heating system is unlikely to persuade the average purchaser to spend their leisure time exploring local showrooms and gathering brochures. That said, the building of trusted relationships can make a

diff erence. Those installers who engage with their customers on a regular basis, gaining their confi dence over a long period of time, are always going to be better placed to preempt their customer’s needs and advise them of what options are available to them. Homeowners may not want to think about their heating, but they may well be content for you to do some of that thinking for them.
