PHAM NEWS | OCTOBER 2025 14 Training Update
Videos to inspire next generation
Coventry-based Lawton Tubes, which supplies copper tubing and fittings to more than 40 countries, has transformed its former 1940s boardroom into a modern recording studio for training sessions. The space will see the company collaborate with
experienced installers, colleges and trade associations to facilitate practical ‘how to’ training sessions, that will also be featured on the firm’s YouTube channel. Demonstrations will range from the basics of
copper pipe and its characteristics, through to prepping, soldering and pressing pipes, as well as exploring modern tools and other practical advice aimed at the plumbing, air conditioning and medical gas sectors. Robert Lawton, marketing and sales director, explains: “These videos and sessions will be
educational and informative to not only educate those starting out in the industry, but to showcase just how cool a career in a trade is and the varied roles available. The best part is it will be freely available to training centres, colleges and trade associations to share with students and members alike – as the content we produce will complement and enhance college syllabuses.” ◼

Teaming up to transform industry training
City & Guilds and the CIPHE have announced a new strategic collaboration designed to transform the future of plumbing and heating education. The aim of the new partnership will be to work on joint initiatives that will enhance training quality, expand educational access, and future-proof the workforce. Key objectives include the delivery of co-sponsored
Train the Trainer programmes that strengthen the educator workforce and improve training standards across the industry. There are also plans to develop and update qualifications and assessments in line with industry-recognised competence frameworks,
ensuring training remains relevant, and reward lifelong learning by linking qualification achievement and Continuing Professional Development to the industry. Commenting on the new partnership, Kevin
Wellman, CEO of CIPHE, says: “Our shared commitment to raising standards, supporting professional development, and promoting the value of skilled trades will have a lasting impact on the plumbing and heating sector. This will help ensure that our industry is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and professional standing it deserves.”
Subsidised solar PV course
Building on the success of its air source heat pump training courses, City Plumbing has announced subsidised solar PV training in conjunction with GTEC Training. City Plumbing has partnered with GTEC once again to offer solar training. Thanks to government funding, the training is offered at the subsidised price of £264. However, the first 50 installers who complete the training will get a £264 credit on their first City Plumbing solar kit order, effectively making the training free. “We know solar installations are a growing area for our customers,
with our research showing that more than 40% of installers are already trained in solar and a further 44% looking to be in the next 12 months,” says Hemal Morjaria, MD - heating & renewables at City Plumbing. “Our subsidised, or even free courses, make upskilling in solar a practical reality for trades who often don’t have the spare cash to invest in their growth and business development. This training, combined with specialist products, tools and service, will help installers take advantage of the massive increase in solar demand.” ◼
