Explaining retrofi t-ready systems

Installing UFH in existing buildings is easier when using tailored solutions that off er benefi ts such as enhanced energy effi ciency, space-saving opportunities, and improved indoor air quality – so says Ambiente’s MD Sheldon Cooper.

U

nlike a new-build project, when selecting a suitable retrofi t underfl oor heating (UFH)

system, the main factors to consider, aside from the heat source capabilities, are the existing fl oor structures and the anticipated fl oor heights after installation. Thanks to ever-advancing

technology, underfl oor heating systems are now available to suit most fl oor constructions. While the most common method involves including the pipework within the fl oor screed build-up, many other projects, especially in older properties, may require alternative options.

Low build-up Choose a system engineered to address the challenges of retrofi tting, like LoFloor 18, which features only 18mm of build-up. It includes a 12mm moisture-resistant MDF baseboard that accommodates the 12mm UFH pipe, with a 6mm top board overlaying the base. To ensure maximum performance and heat output, LoFloor 18 also integrates dual Alu-Foil layers at its core, facilitating rapid and even heat distribution across the entire fl oor surface while minimising heat loss and eliminating cold spots. A fl oating system can be

specifi ed if you are working with a concrete or chipboard sub- base, or between timber battens. Alternatively, bespoke solutions are also available to accommodate irregular joists, situations where an acoustic layer needs to be installed beneath the system, or where a highly specialised ‘breathable’ option may be required for solid wall properties. To keep the project on

track, utilise multifunctional levelling compounds that provide fl exibility and rapid setting for systems that need it. For instance, AmbiFibre Pro is fi bre-reinforced, possesses

well-designed UFH system can be up to 40% more effi cient than a radiator-based setup, assisting homeowners in achieving long-term energy-saving and sustainability goals. Installers and homeowners

alike can feel assured by the results of the Final Summative Assessment of the Energy House 2.0, which concluded that UFH running costs are lower than those of traditional radiator- only systems. This is due to their effi cient design, which maximises heat output while minimising energy input.

Floorplan freedom As homeowners seek fl exible, connected spaces, open and broken-plan living areas continue to be a popular design choice for renovation projects. These layouts combine kitchens, dining areas, and living zones into a cohesive environment, transforming how people interact with their homes. While discussions about heating often emphasise thermostatic zoning and controls, increasing attention is now focused on the type of heat emitter used and the growing advantages of UFH. Unlike wall-mounted radiators,

UFH is completely concealed beneath the fl oor surface, freeing up valuable wall space. This allows for greater fl exibility in positioning furniture and fi ttings precisely where needed, optimising every inch of space. UFH is particularly advantageous when planning large expanses of glazing, such as multi-pane bi-fold doors that connect indoor and outdoor spaces.

excellent fl ow capabilities, and can be applied in thicknesses ranging from 3 to 40mm in a single pour. It is also suitable for surface preparation and readying the subfl oor for a UFH system installation. Regardless of the site

requirements, the key to a successful retrofi t UFH installation is selecting a supplier that can off er comprehensive design support, including CAD drawings with detailed pipework layouts and precise heat output calculations. This crucial design phase ensures the system is tailored to the property’s needs. A knowledgeable supplier will also

performance and minimise energy consumption. Therefore, if the project also involves an upgrade to a renewable heat source, UFH will be the ideal technology partner. As UFH distributes heat over

be able to align the system with any specifi c criteria from the heat source manufacturer, thereby maximising overall effi ciency.

Paired with low-carbon UFH is specifi cally designed to work harmoniously with low- carbon heat sources, including ASHPs, ground source heat pumps and solar thermal systems. These renewable technologies operate at lower fl ow temperatures than traditional gas or oil boilers, making it essential to pair them with suitable emitters to maintain

a larger surface area, it achieves optimal comfort levels at lower temperatures, typically between 35 and 40°C, compared to the signifi cantly higher temperatures (around 80°C) needed by conventional radiators. This low-temperature

operation makes UFH highly compatible with the Future Homes Standard and current Part L building regulations for new builds and major refurbishments. The result is a system that enhances energy effi ciency while reducing running costs and environmental impact. A

Better IAQ In addition to reducing a property’s environmental impact, UFH can signifi cantly improve indoor air quality, seamlessly integrating health and wellbeing into the building’s design. Unlike traditional convection systems that circulate warm air and can stir up dust and allergens, UFH uses radiant heat to deliver a more stable and gentle warmth, especially benefi cial for those with asthma or allergies. When heat radiates from the

entire fl oor surface, it also removes cold spots in a room where mould could form, ensuring that interior fi nishes stay in optimal condition and further lessening the impact on anyone with a respiratory condition. UFH is the ultimate solution for

future-proof heating systems in retrofi t projects, fulfi lling every regulatory requirement and keeping energy bills manageable while creating a comfortable and healthy environment. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/525/59
