Upgraded scheme

With an increasing number of households looking to cash-in on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), it’s good to know that the government is not content to rest on its laurels and is instead raising the prospect of upgrading the scheme itself so that grants will be available for other carbon-saving heating technologies (see this month’s cover story). Not surprisingly, manufacturers and suppliers have welcomed the prospect of consumers being incentivised to purchase more of their products, but it is also reassuring to learn that more funds are to be devoted to training up the army of skilled installers that will undoubtedly be needed if the government is to achieve its net zero objectives. But is it too soon to start blowing up the party balloons? The proposals are now out for consultation and it will be many weeks yet before responses are evaluated and conclusions reached. In the meantime, the Treasury has declared its determination to keep a tight hold of any government spending plans and, while DESNZ can be congratulated on getting its fair share of the public purse, there could be many more funding battles ahead. Any previous cross-party consensus on the subject of net

zero has also been shattered in recent months, as both the Conservatives and Reform have looked to win votes by expressing their disillusionment with the current low carbon agenda. Proponents of heat pump systems are well used to having to overcome objections from a vociferous fossil-fuel lobby, but some sections of the media are now starting to work up a head of steam as the country’s net zero ambitions look like being a clear dividing line for future elections. Will BUS funding plans survive increasing political pressure to lower targets and reduce spending? Only time will tell, but that is all the more reason why the industry should be looking to make the most of any fi nancial support while it remains on the table.
