Expanded product
refurb service
Building on the success of its Refurb by Screwfix service, a wide range of refurbished taps, showers and pressure washers are now available to purchase on
Screwfix.com. Following a recent £1m investment, the company has created a bespoke refurbishment and distribution site where products can be inspected and tested by technicians before being prepared for resale or recycling. The new additions to the range significantly expand the refurbished product options available for tradespeople. As part of its sustainability strategy, ‘Let’s Fix Tomorrow, Today’, Screwfix says it is committed to keeping products in use for longer. Since launching in 2021, almost 400,000 products have been given a new lease of life, offering great choice for customers while tackling product waste levels. The retailer has also invested in a packaging machine that measures refurbished products, and new products with damaged packaging, before repackaging

them in recycled cardboard. This has reduced the volume of packaging, with any leftover cardboard shredded and used to add further protection when products are shipped. Olivia Green, sustainability manager at Screwfix, says: “We strive to supply the trade with great quality products that last. But as customers return unwanted or pre-loved products, where possible, we want to extend their usable life rather than recycling them. This is not only good for our customers, but it also reduces waste.” ◼

City Plumbing has joined forces with VitoEnergy to launch a new heat pump installation umbrella scheme, offering non-MCS accredited installers a route to access government grants and the opportunity to benefit from VitoEnergy’s support package for installers. The partnership will help to reduce paperwork for installers and also provide access to system design support and help with heat loss calculations. VitoEnergy also offers an optional in-person site visit on the first day of installation. Installers will also have complete price transparency on materials and all costs, including the umbrella scheme fees, which can be placed on their City Plumbing credit
account, giving installers up to 30 days to settle payments for better cash flow.
The scheme is currently available only through a select number of branches. ◼

Sustainable products surge
The builders’ merchant Jewson is reporting strong sales across its sustainable product range in the last 12 months, with purchases of renewable heating systems up 60% compared with last year. Analysis of Jewson’s Building for the Future product range, previously known as the Making Better Homes collection, indicates strong demand from tradespeople for more sustainable solutions, such as air source heat pumps and high efficiency insulation. Solar panels and products that enhance biodiversity are also rising in popularity. Matthew Handley, category innovation manager at Jewson, comments: “Given the growing awareness of sustainability and the impressive range of new products that are coming to market, it is perhaps unsurprising that we have seen such a surge in interest from our customers. The Future Homes Standard and recent changes to building regulations are also driving the industry towards more sustainable solutions.” ◼
