Cost and comfort matters

A new report from the independent research charity Nesta rejects the generally accepted notion that the UK’s existing housing stock needs to be better insulated before heat pumps can be fi tted (see this month’s cover story). The basic thrust of the argument is that, while insulation improvements might save on energy and make homes more comfortable, a more widespread deployment of heat pumps is the quickest way for the country to cut its carbon emissions. A well-designed heating system that operates at lower fl ow temperatures is the most important factor, the report concludes, while acknowledging that such advancements would come at a signifi cant cost. But since when did costs become a minor issue? Most homeowners will also probably contend that their comfort levels are not something to be overlooked. With growing concerns about the impact of climate change,

anything that helps to reduce carbon emissions deserves to be championed by those of us who care about the future of the planet, but consumers are unlikely to switch from their fossil- fuel heating systems unless they have a positive experience of the alternative technology. Without adequate insulation, our aging heat-leaking properties are likely to prove too much of a challenge for even the best performing heat pumps – at least for those without money to burn. It should also be remembered that heat pumps aren’t the only

game in town when it comes to reducing carbon emissions. In this month’s issue we feature an electric storage boiler that could provide a more viable option for the millions of smaller homes and apartments that might struggle to accommodate the installation of a heat pump system (see page 30). It might not currently be favoured by any generous subsidies, but it does off er the considerable benefi t of a less disruptive installation – and who wouldn’t want that?
