Boiler price rise robs the poor to help the rich
The country has just gone though the biggest infl ation rise in recent memory after having endured the pandemic. Just before Christmas I got a call from
my merchant’s manager to inform me that there will be a tax levy / stealth tax put on the leading gas boiler from January (what a Christmas present). As I understand it, this is to drive up the cost of gas boilers towards heat pumps and encourage customers to change. This stealth tax will not work as a lot of
people are struggling with living costs. Given the choice of having their
condensing boiler replaced with a new one at the approximate cost of £3000 plus £150 stealth tax or a heat pump approximate cost £10,000 - £30,000 inc grants, for most of my customers there is only one choice. As I see it, the only people fortunate
enough to have heat pumps are the ones who have enough income or savings. What the government has done will not
change things – only time, as this is what has happened in the PV solar market where customers can now see it being a viable option. What we now have is a modern Robin
Hood scenario, but in reverse where the poor are now being robbed to subsidise the rich – and that’s just not right.

Customer reviews
I enjoyed reading your informative article about the importance of online customer reviews and how to deal with negative feedback (see Dec/Jan issue). In my experience, people are quite
accepting that mistakes can happen, but if you’re able to put things right then there’s a good chance that you’ll end up with a customer for life. Irrespective of whether they’re likely to write a bad review, I never want to leave a job knowing that the homeowner is unhappy. After all, as far as I’m concerned, it’s people’s appreciation of my work that makes being a plumbing and heating engineer worthwhile. That said, there will always be some who
are determined to fi nd fault and will do anything they can to avoid paying what’s owed. I’m lucky to say that over the last 40 years I can count the number of such cases on one hand, but sometimes you just have to accept that, whatever you do, nothing is going to make them happy. One of the downsides of the modern
world is that such people can now threaten to express their supposed dissatisfaction on social media – unless, of course, you back down when it comes to them settling the bill.
