Installers urged to review coverage amid rising claims

Recent data indicates a 10% increase in public liability claims in the UK, prompting

the insurance experts at Quotezone.co.uk to warn tradespeople to check they’re fully insured against claims from customers and the public. While it’s not a legal

of driver behaviour patterns, and helps mitigate the environmental impact of a mobile operation. One company that is benefitting

from BigChange Fuel is commercial heating and plumbing contractor Plumbing & Gas Solutions. Having switched to BigChange, Plumbing & Gas Solutions says it is now securing lower pence per litre prices every time it fills up its fleet of vehicles. Averaging more than 1,500 litres of fuel consumed each month will save the Milton Keynes- based operation in the region of £7,000 a year. “Looking at the cost

effectiveness of our existing fuel card scheme had been on my radar for some time,” says operations

director Darryl Taylor. “However, it wasn’t until I attended a BigChange Customer Event, and heard how other companies were achieving savings, that I actioned a review. “Just by comparing price per litre

between the two offerings for a single month’s usage, I calculated that we would pay around 38 pence per litre less with BigChange. When you multiply that by the number of vehicles we have, and the miles we travel, that is a massive saving for us. “These savings will be invested

back into our team, supporting and upskilling our engineers and apprentices, ensuring we remain competitive.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/225/26

requirement, Quotezone says all tradespeople should have public liability insurance in place. In the UK last year, there were 58,933 public liability claims registered to the Compensation Recovery Unit (CRU) – up 10% from the previous year, 2022-23. The CRU recovered nearly £8 million in public liability claims, up 33% from £5.9 million the year before. Public liability insurance covers the cost of compensation and legal fees if your business is sued for injury or damage to a third party. It includes personal injuries and loss or damage to a property, including the cost of replacing damaged property. It could cover something relatively minor, such as paint being spilt on a carpet or punctures caused

by discarded nails, but also more extreme issues, including death. Some customers may also insist tradespeople have public liability insurance in place. Without it, they could be in breach of contract or may not get a contract at all. Greg Wilson, CEO at

Quotezone.co.uk, says: “Public liability insurance is crucial for tradespeople across the UK. Not only does it safeguard your business, it also recognises the challenges faced by tradespeople and the potential claims they could come up against. Public liability insurance isn’t required by law, but investing in it ensures peace of mind and increases professional credibility.” Businesses are advised to

check to ensure all obligations are met and adequate protection is applied. Quotezone says it can help business owners compare and find savings on business insurance and all sorts of related products such as public liability insurance for builders. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/225/27
