Education spotlight

a lot of room for improvement. I think there is increased awareness of diversity and the positive role it plays in the workplace. It empowers us to achieve greater creativity and innovation, allowing us to think outside the box, and drive innovation that allows us to grow closer to our customers, partners, and communities. By having diversity, different ideas and perspectives are brought to

the table that can lead to the creation of amazing innovation. Diversity also makes the workplace far more enjoyable and a more interesting environment to work in. A balance is very important and to ensure that we don’t alienate existing and potential employees by thinking we are just filling quotas. It’s about having the best person for the job. No matter if it’s working in IT or

security or any industry. I think it’s really important for teams to have different inputs and ways of thinking, and it really helps when you get that different viewpoint. We need that diversity in teams - this is equally true of other business departments that might be more heavily female orientated who need the male perspective, it gives us perspective and that different viewpoint. By having diversity, different ideas and perspectives are brought to the table that can lead to the creation of amazing innovation.

Do you think there is anything culturally different between general technology companies and those in cybersecurity? If so, what’s driving that? Tere isn’t anything culturally different between cybersecurity, IT or any sector for that matter. It’s more about progressive organisations versus those that hold a more rigid or traditional view of the workplace and employees within that. Technology and Cybersecurity companies are fast moving and constantly evolving, as employees it can sometimes be tricky to keep up with the pace of change and learning. I think there has been a marked cultural difference in the last ten,

or even five years ago. I remember a time, a good few years ago and I hasten to add before Tenable, where I was told I couldn’t think of working in that position as I had a family to consider. Tere is no way anyone would say that to me now. And in truth, it made me more determined to get that job and prove them wrong. We still have a long way to go but it has definitely moved in the right direction.

www.pcr-online.biz I’ve seen lots of companies say they’re driving change, and then

there are those that actually do it. Te latter tend to be progressive organisations as opposed to those that hold a more rigid or traditional view of the workplace and employees within that. Tat said, the pandemic has forced many organisations to reconsider this stance, particularly as many had to shiſt to accommodate work-from-home mandates globally. Te culture at Tenable is one where every employee feels seen,

valued, welcome and have a sense of belonging. Like many, we have adopted a hybrid working policy giving each and every employee the freedom to do their best work, unhindered by the confines of a physical office or desk. I don’t just feel like a number but that I actually matter to the company. Benefits such as five Fridays off during the summer make a huge difference to us all, especially working parents trying to balance childcare and family commitments during the UK’s typical school vacation. Even if you don’t have family commitments yet, you get to spend time doing your hobbies or whatever you like for five

days in the warmer weather (hopefully).

What can organisations do to

attract cyber talent? A flexible working

environment, combined with a diverse and healthy

company culture, will be key to not only attracting cyber talent but

retaining it. Tere could be some that think, allowing employees to determine their own

working environment or even hours, will mean a drop

in productivity. For Tenable, our experience has been the reverse. By allowing employees to have the flexibility to work wherever, whenever, as long as they meet their commitments, we’ve actually seen an increase in productivity. I was really excited to be part of our Global Intern Program, which opened up this year and I firmly believe that this is a great way of attracting cyber talent. With increasingly blurred lines between work and home,

company culture is even more important to people when evaluating employment opportunities. Companies that can demonstrate that they take a “people first” approach can oſten present more interesting and supportive benefits with a particular focus on wellness efforts, increased days off and assistance programs that allow employees to focus on themselves.
