Women in tech Zoomo’s Lisa Conibear
Zoomo is an Australian based e-bike specialist, providing e-bikes to businesses and individuals to rent or buy at an affordable cost. We spoke with Lisa Conibear, Zoomo’s UK & EU Director, to find out how and why she found her way into this particular industry and what it has to offer as her as a female leader.
Lisa Conibear, UK & EU Director, Zoomo had this to say.
What is your professional background and how has this contributed to your current working position? I studied Business and Economics at University, and was particularly lucky to be able to study in Denmark where my programme had up to half of females in it. Most of the exams in that programme were oral, where you
had to present your work to your professors live, and oſten in front of your classmates. It was this experience that taught me how to be articulate, confident and convincing when speaking - all skills that have helped me throughout my career. Unfortunately, women don’t oſten get this training and as a result they come across as less confident, hindering how they are seen by colleagues, slowing their progression.
What are your experiences of being a female tech leader? In my early career I worked in the trading division of an oil company. Tere were very few female traders, and even fewer female leaders in the trading arm of the company. It was therefore very important to the company to increase the % of women in leadership positions. Tis meant that conversations around diversity and female leadership were always taken seriously by the leadership team. Te harder part was convincing the existing traders and men
in the company. Tey didn’t believe in the value of diversity and they could not see the link between diversity and better outcomes for the company. It was here that I had to dig into the data and create a convincing narrative that people would believe and support. It was hard, and most oſten I failed to convince stakeholders. However, through this experience I learned how I could better influence people and improve my narrative. I have found that in the tech sector people are more open to the subject of diversity and that change oſten comes from the bottom up, rather than top down in the oil and gas industry.
