Sustainable solutions for your business
Hope Smyth, Marketing Executive at Climb Channel Solutions explains how companies can adopt a more sustainable working business practice by taking a few simple first steps.
S
ustainable business. Once considered as a ‘nice- to-have’, there is no denying that sustainability has become an essential factor across all sectors. Te cited
reasons for this trend are plentiful; from genuine desire to adopt greener practices, to simply attracting a larger customer base. Te goal? To improve sustainability and demand more from partners. Te pressures from key stakeholders, customers,
partners and even investors to improve sustainability are increasing dramatically, especially in the tech industry. A key trend in the financial sector this year is citing Environmental and Social Governance factors in the analysis of potential investment opportunities and business valuations. Te demand from consumers for more ethical practices is
undeniable. 84% of consumers factor in a company’s brand values when making a purchase (according to
TollFreeForwarding.com’s 2020 report). Businesses operating within the channel aren’t exempt from this, either. Many end-users and vendors are pushing to ensure their partners, donors and outsourced services meet higher ethical standards. Terefore, to continue attracting new business and new partners
that focus on sustainable and ethical business practices, companies operating within the channel have to step up. However, prioritising sustainable change throughout the company
can seem difficult to implement. Especially, for smaller businesses on a shoe-string budget or enterprise corporations with historical systems and long approval processes. It can be easier to break it down into bitesize projects that either present a justifiable ROI or a healthy benefit-cost ratio.
Improving sustainability from within To reside and operate within sectors prioritising sustainability; one must become sustainable. Tis is true of every vendor, distributor, reseller and end-user. Investing time and money into large-scale change projects can be
difficult, even if it’s high on the company’s agenda. However, there are initial steps companies can take to improve their overall sustainability, building up to larger projects in the future.
Reducing eWaste 53.6 million metric tonnes of electronic waste were generated worldwide in 2019. Whereas it is vital to ensure that sensitive data is erased and doesn’t fall into the wrong hands, destroying perfectly

functioning devices is unjustifiable. Not only does it cost businesses exponentially in replacing each device, it’s also one of the biggest environmental impacts of the tech industry. Using a data erasure solution, that offers absolute data
sanitisation, extends the lifecycle of business devices, allowing them to be reused within the company or even donated to charities and schools. Why stop at reducing eWaste? More and more corporate
waste disposal providers are offering a Zero Waste to Landfill policy. Tis means that at least 99% of the waste they collect is either recycled or sustainably disposed of without it touching landfill.
Go paperless Printing handouts? Ordering business cards? Sending out direct mail campaigns or event invitations? Not only is this an unnecessary business expense, it’s also an easily avoided impact on the planet. Instead of printing handouts, why not share the document to a
screen or projector in the meeting room? Additionally, use a PDF solution for sending and editing more sensitive documents. LinkedIn is the new business card. Not only does it save paper
and printing costs, but you can reach out with a message, increasing communication and trust. With less people working from offices, sending physical mail may
be a waste of time and valuable resources. How about calling your target list? Ten offer to follow up with an email or direct message.
Migrate to the cloud A recent report by 451 Research, revealed that moving to the cloud from on-premises data centres can reduce energy consumption and associated carbon emissions by nearly 80%. Tis could be boosted further if businesses seek a sustainable cloud provider utilising partially or fully renewable energy. If cloud providers achieve a status of 100% renewable energy, then a company’s carbon emissions savings could increase by 93% compared to on-premises data storage. Cloud subscriptions can also prove to be more cost-effective
than the running maintenance and secondary costs of on-premises data centres. No matter what size the company is, improving sustainability
should be on the top of your agenda. It’s definitely on the top of your customers’ agenda and they’re on the lookout for green tech solutions from vendors (and their partners) who share the same values.
