Government and MPs back the Cycle Industry’s E-bike Trust Mark

Phillip Darnton, Executive Director of the Bicycle Association, gives an update on the E-Bike Positive Trust Mark since its launch in July 2026.

J

ust eight weeks ago, the Bicycle Association (BA), in partnership with the Association of Cycle Traders (ACT), launched the E-Bike Positive trust mark.

This industry-wide initiative is designed to reassure the public, potential purchasers and the media of what we in the industry already know: that reputable e-bikes from the UK cycle industry are extremely safe and fully road legal. It does this by identifying verified brands whose e-bikes are all safe and road legal, and by listing responsible retailers where only safe and road legal e-bikes can be bought and serviced. 33 e-bike brands have so far been rigorously audited by

the BA for compliance and safety and are now officially ‘E-Bike Positive verified brands’. Likewise, retailers up and down the country are committing via the ACT to sell, maintain and repair only safe and road legal e-bikes, including from E-Bike Positive verified brands, to become ‘E-Bike Positive approved retailers’. Over 600 outlets are already participating, giving

customers the confidence to “Buy Safe, Ride Legal” with a new e-bike.

Official recognition E-Bike Positive was recently presented by the BA and ACT to an exclusive session of the All-Party Parliamentary Cycling and Walking Group (APPCWG). MPs across the

political spectrum have given their enthusiastic support, recognising that the industry is doing all it possibly can to publicise that reputable e-bikes from responsible UK suppliers are safe and road legal. MPs from the APPGCW are

exploring the possibility of securing a Westminster Hall debate to put more pressure on Government for greater urgency to pass tough regulations to tackle the sale and use of illegal ‘e-bikes’. In most cases, these are not cycles at all but, legally speaking, electric motorbikes, non-compliant with the e-cycle

regulations. E-Bike Positive has also been the subject of a series

of meetings with Government officials and Ministers in the Department for Transport and the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade. Both Ministers have approved changes to their published online guidance on e-bike safety to include a powerful reference encouraging people to check for E-Bike Positive brands and retailers when making a purchase. We are also working with Government to add the same advice to the Cycle to Work scheme guidance, to help point users of the Government’s tax incentive to verified safe and road legal e-bikes and responsible retailers. Transport for London has followed suit, giving the same advice on their website with a “Buy Safe, Ride Legal” reference to E-Bike Positive. With Ministers, MPs, and Government officials’ support, E-Bike Positive is quickly becoming the nationally
