INTERVIEW
Could you tell us a little about how ICE Trikes started and what makes you stand out? Our story traces back to the original Trice in 1986, with Inspired Cycle Engineering, or ICE Trikes, established in 1999. We have been designing and manufacturing recumbent trikes in Cornwall ever since, combining British engineering with a global customer base. What makes us different is the breadth of our range and our ability to build to order. From the performance-focused VTX to the adventure-ready Full Fat and our new handcycles, we design around different riders, ambitions and abilities and always look to inspire our customers by leading the market with new innovations – such as the game-changing PERS chainless electric assist system. We became employee-owned in late 2022 and were B Corp Certified in 2024 and have a very clear purpose: to put a smile on people’s faces through inspired cycle engineering. That means building a great product and also running a business that makes a positive difference.
How can traditional bike shops better equip themselves to serve adaptive and recumbent riders? Start by being curious, listening and not making assumptions about what someone can or can’t do; bike shops don’t need to stock every adaptive cycle or recumbent model – rather, understand the options and know where to find the right expertise. Our new ICE Handcycle is a good example - the folding entry system makes getting on and off easier, while electric assistance helps riders access longer rides and more challenging terrain. Customers need knowledgeable advice, suitable demonstrations and time to find the right setup and understand how a recumbent trike can either get them out cycling again or provide a world of new opportunities. Bike shops can play a vital role in connecting people with those opportunities, and for their business, it provides the potential to open up new market sectors and therefore additional business revenue.

Electric assistance is an increasingly important part of the market and is now more than 50% of our mix. We are seeing appeal across a broad range of riders, from touring enthusiasts to people returning to cycling after injury or
