MINUTES WITH...

We take fi ve to chat with Martin Piper and Tom Martin, Co-directors of TMP Parts Source to get to know their business.

Tell us about TMP Parts? Was there a specific gap in the cycling industry or reason that led to the creation of the business? The roots of TMP lay in Re-Cycling Bikes (our Hampshire- based new and used Bike Shop next door) and was started through the distributors we traditionally bought graded bikes from, also offering us parts and accessories that they wanted to liquidate and move on. Fast forward to Covid and the printer in the unit next door was ceasing trading, we jumped at the chance to take on the extra space and to expand the TMP business and actively promote what we could offer. Since then, we have found that most large businesses have some kind of overstock or an ‘Isle 15’ in their warehouses with some unloved, dusty legacy stock sitting there - and sitting on their stock balance sheets too.

Is there anyone you don’t typically purchase from? What types of businesses do you work with primarily? We definitely don’t have a favourite type of vendor but at one end of the spectrum, we currently work with a few of the large distributors, taking stock on a regular basis which creates the bread and butter side of our business, whilst as the other end, having the task of working with older retail bike shop businesses where the owner is retiring or moving on. This is particularly interesting to us as we are personally into the vintage Road Bike, MTB and BMX scenes and you never know what you are going to find! On the classic and vintage parts, we feel like we’re a bit of a service – sending lots of new-old-stock and hard-to- find parts all around the world, rather than them sitting, dusty in the back of a bike shop somewhere. We are always open to garnering new relationships and welcome all new vendors with any opportunities – apart
