Kennedy’s Confection speaks with Daniel Wittmaack, Head of Process Engineering & Product Management at Bühler Group (pictured)

Bühler’s ChocoX modular approach enhances end product variety, sustainability, and operational flexibility

Discover how Bühler’s innovative ChocoX modular system transforms confectionery production, offering unparalleled flexibility, sustainability, and efficiency to meet the diverse demands of the ever-evolving market

Q: How does Bühler prioritise end product variety when designing production processes and systems? As a long-lasting partner in the industry for processing a wide range of different confectionery products, we do not see it as our role to prioritise end products for our customers. Ultimately, it is one of the core competences of our customers to identify and prioritise end products based on specific business plans. Instead, we see it as our role to consult along the product development journey with respect to the meaningful combination and grouping of the required process steps within one production line to produce a coherent range of products. Via our end-to-end application centre in particular, we

provide the chance to mutually evaluate individual process steps with our customers from a process and technology perspective. This allows us to support our clients at an early stage in their product development and mutually develop

the most suitable process and manufacturing line for them. In general, we differentiate between two major approaches.

On the one hand, there are the efficiency-focused monoline systems, our workhorses, which are optimised to produce a manageable range of products reliably day in and day out. On the other hand, alongside these monoline systems, our flexible product portfolio has become increasingly vital. These types of lines enable the highly efficient production of a wide variety of different end products over the entire lifetime of a production line.

Q: Can you describe a recent project or initiative where Bühler enhanced end product flexibility in its manufacturing operations? What were the results? A nice example of this trend is the development of our ChocoX. This type of line is based on a fully modular approach that allows our customers to tailor the line by adding or switching
