T


here are some big challenges that need to be overcome in order to achieve true sustainability of cocoa. The value cocoa farmers get for their cocoa within the value chain is currently unsustainable as it does not allow them to achieve a decent standard of living. This has created a production crisis,


with many farmers not properly taking care of their farms and the younger generation of farmers migrating to cities in search of a better standard of living. There are manifold efforts, led by various stakeholders in the


cocoa sector, trying to determine what the living income for cocoa farmers should be, how to calculate it, and ultimately how to apply it. Companies, development organisations, researchers and others are all attempting interventions. But how do we know which ones will work the best? World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) argues that to answer this question it is first necessary to make sure that everyone is accurately measuring cocoa household income in the same way. And until recently, there hasn’t been one standard way to do it. WCF, GIZ, SWISSCO, Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) set out to
