Feature: Enclosures
Reinventing the Abox
By Chris Lloyd, Managing Director, Spelsberg Els UK
T
he Abox series from Spelsberg has been a staple enclosure for system builders and OEMs for decades. Rugged, easy to install and cost effective,
it is one of the most recognisable junction boxes around. Now, thanks to a ground up re-design, the Abox and Abox Pro offer more reliable connections than ever before. At its heart the Abox series is designed
to be quick, simple and safe for various installations, in almost any industry. Tough construction and weatherproof design make these boxes suitable for outdoor use, with a smart design that enables minimal installation effort. Te latest version builds upon these qualities to offer one of the best connection solutions on the market. Installation is faster than ever before,
thanks to a smart ‘single screwdriver’ design. Te junction box’s cover screws are fastened using a standard Pozidrive PZ/S screwdriver, the same as with the supplied terminal blocks and clamp mounts within the enclosure. Te boxes feature internal centre markings for precise and fast placement during installation. We increased its internal size by 35%,
providing much more space for trickier installations. Maximum wiring freedom improves cable management during installation and allows easier work inside the junction box, should maintenance or updates be required in the future. For highly rugged applications, the

new Abox Pro addresses all but the most extreme requirements. It offers IK09 impact resistance and high chemical resistance. With IP69 protection and endurance for a -35ºC to +80ºC temperature range, the Abox Pro can be used in 99.9% of all outdoor applications.
Preserving the original features Spelsberg’s engineers have been just as diligent in protecting the Abox’s best features as in introducing the new. Installers still benefit from easy access through a choice of soſt membranes (Abox 100) or patented knockouts. Te soſt membranes are self-sealing to IP66, whereas the knockouts ensure that the required cable cross-section comes out cleanly. A new update guarantees three entry points on at least one side of even the
smallest enclosures. With such new features, the Abox and Abox Pro continue to set the industry benchmark for quality. VDE, DNV and DLG certifications are also covered, assuring both the installer and the end user of the highest quality standard for safe electrical installations in extreme indoor and outdoor environments – even in industries like marine, offshore and agriculture. Fundamentally, the Abox is still the
same product that it has been for the last 30-odd years. Tis latest offering simply takes its simplicity and reliability to new levels. In addition, Spelsberg UK continues to offer a full design consultation and customisation service for all orders, regardless of size. Tis adds further versatility and convenience to one of the best junction boxes on the market today.
