Year 2023: Major innovations in automotive, consumer devices and connected healthcare

lectronics company Molex sees 2023 a year of many innovations in the automotive, consumer devices, data centre and connected healthcare


markets, powered by increased investments and growing use of real-time data. Access to data and its analysis and


more-pervasive connectivity are also fuelling other powerful applications, such as artificial intelligence (AI), AR/ VR, digital twins, sensors and machine learning, extending to supply chain intelligence, advanced manufacturing and fulfillment. The collection of rich data has already produced waves of highly-intelligent, specific applications that are transforming entire industry segments, though at the cost of latency and bandwidth problems. As more applications for AI, AR/VR and IoT sensors emerge, there will be even more pressure for faster cloud- computing speeds and edge-computing solutions that move data processing and computational storage closer to the edge of high-speed networks. In addition, there will also be a continued push for 5G, diagnostic wearables and electrification, which will contribute to ever-increasing volumes of data that must be collected, calibrated and shared across a multitude of smart devices and platforms. Molex also forecasts a rise in cross-


functional data collection to support integrated demand planning and end- to-end supply chain visibility across the electronics ecosystem. Integrated risk insights will boost logistics visibility, recovery and transportation, whilst

Automotive Automotive trends include advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), Level-2 and Level-3 autonomy, and battery management, zonal architectures and EV charging stations. Demand for infrastructure advancements will escalate over the next 12-18 months, placing greater emphasis on the need for intelligent sensors and high-speed connectors.


Industrial applications In the industrial space, AR/VR will prove an early success, even though they won’t be mainstream for five more years. In the meantime, offerings from Apple, Meta and others will present these companies’ vision of future AR and VR use cases. Investments in Industrial IoT will


continue to increase, thanks to the growing use of robotics and AI in factory and logistics settings.

will continue to expand away from China, and even accelerate, resulting in incremental investments in India, from major US and even Chinese device makers.


Data centres In the data centres sector, investments will continue to focus on processing speeds and capacity, where greater computational processing speeds and storage capacities will be required. The explosion of IoT and applications for the consumer and business sectors will create a major trend for more robust compute and storage capabilities. Edge computing will take the largest share of investments, with migration to Extended Reality (XR), which will move data processing to the edge and enable inferencing in real time, for much better performance.


Healthcare When it comes to personalised healthcare solutions, there will be continued blurring of consumer products with regulated ones. Providers of wearable diagnostics and the use of tracking applications for fitness, mental health and other wellbeing applications must navigate the regulatory environment, which needs specialised expertise. In this sector, data privacy and


security will remain top priorities. Remote patient monitoring is cecoming less about connectivity and more about actionable real-time information analysis, especially amid persistent privacy and security sensitivities.
