DIY WEEK AWARDS 2025 WINNERS

Sustainability Initiative of the Year Palace Chemicals

As a leading independent manufacturer of DIY products since 1978, Palace Chemicals aims to set the industry benchmark for sustainability, both in terms of its new product launches and also the environmental measures installed at its Liverpool manufacturing facility. To achieve this, the company has invested continually in its production facilities to enable it both to serve its customers better, fulfilling orders in full and on time, while at the same time making a real contribution towards achieving net zero carbon by 2050. This includes the day-to-day operations of the business and the way it manufactures its products and the types of products it offers on to the market. Palace Chemicals gained its ISO 14001 BSI accreditation for Environmental Management Systems nearly 20 years ago, since when the team has continually searched for ways to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and create superior manufacturing systems, better working conditions and a healthier planet.

One of the biggest developments has been the installation of a closed-loop dust extraction and recycling system. Last year the company installed more than 840 solar panels at its Liverpool site, and these now supply over 75% of the energy required for the company’s production processes. Additionally, the rest of Palace’s energy requirements are from a provider which only supplies renewable energy, meaning that all the energy the company uses comes from renewable sources. Within the last year the company has also installed motion sensors

throughout its premises, meaning that lights only come on as and when required. As well as its production

processes, Palace also focuses on the sustainability of its product range.

In an important new initiative, the company is also pioneering a new packaging solution for its powdered products, which removes the need for an internal

plastic bag without compromising the durability or water resistance requirements of the packaging material. The new packaging is made from recycled materials and is itself wholly recyclable. Additionally, it has removed more than 80,000 composite paper sacks from its waste system, with almost 100 per cent of its raw materials now handled via a fully automated bulk transfer system.

The judges said: “This was a very detailed entry which included information on a number of key sustainability initiatives aimed at caring for customers, staff, the community and the environment, which made it a standout entry and a clear winner!”
