FEATURE: RENEWABLES & SUSTAINABILITY BARTOLINE

SECURES GOLD ECOVADIS SUSTAINABILITY RATING

Decorating sundries manufacturer Bartoline has secured a Gold EcoVadis Sustainability rating following the business’ accomplishment of Bronze in March last year.

F

ollowing its achievement in reaching Bronze in 2022, Bartoline set the ambitious target of achieving

Gold EcoVadis sustainability status by 2024. Notwithstanding the challenging economic situation, Bartoline continued to drive forward on such key sustainability activities.

And following the

re-assessment this year, Bartoline is proud to have exceeded its aim and has succeeded in achieving a Gold Ecovadis standard, placing the organisation in the top five percent of EcoVadis rated companies in the paints, varnishes and similar coatings, printing ink and mastics manufacturing sector.

International sustainability standards EcoVadis provides the leading solution for monitoring

sustainability in global supply chains. The company’s methodology is based on international sustainability standards such as Global Reporting Initiative, United Nations Global Compact, and ISO 26000 standard. “Personally, I am really pleased with everyone’s contribution to making improvements across the business,” says MD Paul Robbins. “Receiving an external endorsement with a reputable leader such as EcoVadis reinforces our credibility and trust that our customers and suppliers can have in our business systems.”

The EcoVadis assessment evaluated Bartoline on 21 sustainability criteria across four core themes: environment, labour & human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement.

The Gold Sustainability rating is classed as being ‘Advanced’ and confirms how successful Bartoline

have integrated the principles of sustainability into their organisation and management systems. It further reinforces the policies and tangible actions taken on major issues, as well as Bartoline’s comprehensive reporting, innovative practices and external recognition. “We have made vast progress in our approach to improve policies, actions and results across each of the four pillars,” says Alan Garrigan, Bartoline’s Head of Business Systems and Improvement. “Our significant strengthening in labour & human rights and the environment has been a fundamental step to achieving the Gold rating and we are delighted to have accomplished this award in such a short, projected timeframe.”

About Bartoline

As an established UK decorative sundries supplier, Bartoline’s

GARDEN CENTRE GROUP FIRST IN UK TO ACCREDIT ITS OWN SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING

The team at Yorkshire Garden Centres has developed a training programme in conjunction with the award-winning Manchester charity, The Carbon Literacy Project in order to equip its 509 employees with the skills to contribute to becoming a carbon-neutral business. The Carbon Literacy Project is based on the premise that, in order to cut carbon emissions by the kind of reductions demanded by science, then the

culture needs to change alongside technology. Yorkshire Garden Centres’ Sustainability Lead, Steph Bates says: “We plan to roll out the Carbon Literacy workshops to all of our employees, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to learn and embrace positive changes to reduce their carbon impacts. The aim is to create more awareness of the environmental costs and impacts of greenhouse gas emissions through our everyday activities, and to inspire people to reduce emissions on an individual, community and company basis. “The project is one of many of our sustainability initiatives and will see our whole team do the training and make over 800 carbon-reducing pledges by December 2024. Once made, these pledges have the power to save the equivalent energy to power 1500 homes each year. It would take approximately 132,000 trees 10 years to capture this level of emissions.”

22 DIY WEEK JUNE 2023

Organisations that have a Carbon Literate workforce can be accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project team as a ‘Carbon Literate Organisation’ (CLO). Yorkshire Garden Centres is on target to achieve a Bronze Accreditation by the end of June 2023. For every pledge made by its team, Yorkshire Garden Centres are donating £5 to support Carbon Literacy Education in Schools and Community Groups.
