Embracing change
We’ve certainly been experiencing a long dry spell of weather in the south of the UK resulting in some water companies already imposing hosepipe bans. The warm weather is nice and it seems like we are in for a good summer, but it’s worrying when we already have a lack of rain and water shortages as early as June. Despite all the rain we had over the winter, the ground is now extremely dry and my lawn and the rest of the garden are starting to suffer and look far from their best. As we start to see the real effects of climate change, it’s good to see our industry stepping up and offering new products and solutions designed to help save precious natural resources and make less impact on the environment. Being energy efficient
and environmentally friendly is no longer a wish, it’s a must and there are now thankfully many products on the market that can help businesses and customers save money and fulfil their obligations to the planet. Whether it’s reducing our reliance on peat in growing media, removing nasty chemicals from weedkillers and plant
protection products, finding ways to save energy, or solutions for harnessing natural resources to power our homes, there are a multitude of options to help customers tackle these issues. Consumers are being bombarded with a mix of messages about saving energy and the environment, so by providing good advice and offering a suitable range of products our industry can help consumers make the right choices and purchasing decisions. We’ve covered some of these in this issue’s feature on renewables and sustainability and we also saw some entered and winning categories in our recent DIY Week Awards. You can read more about our amazing award winners in this issue’s special supplement.
