DIY WEEK AWARDS 2023 WINNERS 2018 Editor’s Choice Award
Newsome Tools 9-in-1 Multi function knife
In addition to using as a conventional penknife, this product has a further eight other functions, which are: scissors, saw, can opener, slotted screwdriver, bottle opener, carabiner, corkscrew and Philips screwdriver. It is competitively priced, easy to transport and store and saves having to buy and carry a multitude of other implements. In a busy retail environment, this is an easy sale, as it’s attractively presented and makes an ideal gift in addition to being a versatile and useful tool. Newsome Tools offers a range of knifes for use in the garden, at home and on the farm.
The judges said: “We’ve seen multifunction tools before, but the quality
and presentation of this one from Newsome Tools really stand out and make it a deserving winner of this special category.”

Retailer of the Year Dads Shop
Established in 1966, Dads Shop is a longstanding local DIY/Hardware
business their local that
prides itself on being run more traditionally. The family owners take great joy in being at the heart of
maintaining strong
community and familiarity
with their customers and the way that they operate. Despite this, they didn’t want their progress to potentially be hindered by a stubborn attitude that may keep them stuck in the past. They began thinking about their responsibilities in regards to how they
might affect things outside of their work and felt the need to become more conscious of what impact they could make to the environment. With this in mind, in the middle of 2020, they had a great starting point and created some important goals to tackle their carbon footprint. The future of Dads Shop is looking promising and they have already taken fantastic steps in the right direction, but they have more goals they’re aiming for and will work hard to reach them. The judges said: “A great entry, that leans more towards the sustainability initiative. Overall they should be commended as a progressive retailer who can show and demonstrate how to make an impact and punch above your weight.”

Retailer of the Year Over £50m turnover
UK Flooring Direct UK Flooring Direct was founded by CEO Jason Ashby in 2005 with a £299 investment in a website. The company is now an online retailer that sells a range of more than 450 products including wood and laminate flooring to both retail and trade customers via its website. From humble beginnings, the company now employs more than 200 people and sold almost 3m sq ft of flooring to customers across the UK in 2020. The company moved to its current headquarters in Hinckley, Leicestershire in late 2017 and its growth since then has accelerated dramatically, including during 2020 when, despite the country being hit by Covid-19, the firm enjoyed its most successful year yet with staff numbers, orders and revenues all rising. To that end, the company has just enhanced its annual digital investment budget to £2.5 million as it uses a range of technology to engage with and market to customers, including the use of AI. UK Flooring Direct’s marketing tactics range from targeted adverts,
relative to solving household needs, to broader adverts, with plenty of inspiration for new projects; all of which is partnered with supportive ways to try before they buy, with their industry leading free sample service and room visualiser.
The judges said: “From humble beginnings, UK Flooring Direct has now
grown to become one the country’s leading online flooring retailers that employs over 200 people and sells a range of more than 450 products, all while helping support local community projects.”
