Zero Rate VAT on Energy-Saving Materials

The Chancellor of the Exchequer cut VAT from 5% down to zero % on the supply and installation of eligible goods by businesses into homes in England, Wales & Scotland (not Northern Ireland). The law has been changed and this came into force on Friday, 1 April 2022, for the next 5 years. Merchants still have to sell energy-saving materials & products at the standard 20% rate. This also applies if a DIY retail customer buys the goods from you. This is a win for BMF lobbying we did 6 years ago around the time of the EU vs UK court case in Luxembourg.

annual turnover of less than £2m. The NMBS grant will cover the full cost of BMF membership for the first 12 months of a two-year annual subscription.

The second year’s fees will be paid by the member company, and they will receive a substantial discount on the BMF’s standard subscription rates.

This tax cut does not apply in Northern Ireland due to the Northern Ireland Protocol. The reduced VAT rate there remains unaffected at 5% as now. the BMF and equally committed to supporting the growth and development of our independent merchant members. We see real value in the BMF’s services to merchants, suppliers and indeed the whole industry and identified the opportunities this would provide to our smaller members. “Requiring them to commit to two year’s membership of the BMF is an important element of the Kick-Start scheme. By encouraging the level of engagement that comes with long-term membership they will be able to fully explore and experience the BMF’s wide range of training and support
