AKW’s new level-access shower tray for visual
impairment users AKW’s Mullen shower tray, creates a defined level-access showering area that is ideal for use by those with visual impairments. Suitable for installation on either concrete or wooden flooring, this cost-effective shower tray offers unrivalled strength and stability and can support up to 30 stones (190kg) in weight. It can either be fitted as a level access solution, requiring only a 27mm floor recess for installation, or can be surface-mounted. For added safety, the tray is slip-resistant and features a textured surface for added safety. With a 25mm fall inside the tray, there is also excellent water drainage. The Mullen shower tray comes with a unique Intergrip® clamping strip which grips and seals vinyl flooring in the tray, creating a watertight seal. Due to the flexibility of the clamping strip, flooring can also be fitted or changed after the tray and shower screen have been installed. It is also possible to maintain level-access showering when using floor tiles, and these fit under the clamping strip, with built-in tiling upstands ensuring the all-round integrity of the water seals.

Methven welcomes water incentives for housebuilder
The southern water company, Thames Water, has recently announced measures to protect its water stressed region by rewarding housebuilders, developers and specifiers for installing low-flow showers and other technologies to save water.
As well as offering discounts on the cost of joining the sewage network, Thames Water is also offering further incentives for housebuilders looking to reduce water usage in their properties. If housebuilders retrofit
existing homes, they could be paid more than £1,000 per property on new developments. Martin Walker, CEO for Methven, says: “We’re encouraged by these new incentives that Thames Water has set out, water shortages in the UK are becoming increasingly worrying and as a manufacturer we have been committed to bringing about real change in the bathroom industry.
“One of the things we hear time and time again from housebuilders, developers and specifiers is that they worry that low-flow products will have an impact on performance. That is why we’ve invested heavily in water saving technologies to ensure that they deliver the highest standards in water efficiency without compromising on form or function.”
There are concerns that the UK will experience severe water shortages and water-stressed regions in the next 20 years due to climate change and population growth. Methven’s bathroom and kitchen tapware and showering systems support designers, architects, specifiers and developers to achieve below the recommended 110 litres per person per day target and achieve the substantial incentives available from water providers. With the inflationary pressure of building new homes increasing, these incentives not only save housebuilders and developers money on their connection charges but ultimately these savings will be passed on to homeowners through lower water bills.
