STELRAD GOES GREEN WITH TATA STEEL…
Radiator manufacturer Stelrad Radiators is to offer the first 90% green steel radiator range, thanks to a new collaboration with Tata Steel.
S
teel maker Tata Steel is supplying UK made 90% Carbon Lite steel to Stelrad Radiators, under a new initiative, so that the latter’s customers can choose a Green Compact radiator range that contributes directly to a reduction in atmospheric CO2 today and accelerates decarbonisation in the future.
Tata Steel has steelmaking facilities in Port Talbot in South Wales, and its green steel comes with a certificate from DNV – Det Norske Veritas to prove it has 90% lower embodied CO2 emissions.
The process for producing the steel is called Optemis Carbon Lite, an interim decarbonisation solution. Carbon Lite aims to achieve CO2 reductions ahead of supply chain decarbonisation. Optemis Carbon Lite is a fully certified in-setting scheme from Tata Steel UK which offers a lower CO2 intensity through the supply chain. Leading assurance organisation DNV verifies these CO2 savings and credits them into a CO2 bank. Stelrad then withdraws from this CO2 bank to achieve carbon footprint reductions by offering the Green Series range to customers. Like Tata Steel UK, rather than CO2 savings being allocated across all products, Stelrad has applied the savings to specific products – the new and exclusive Green Compact. All revenues generated by the process are reinvested to fund additional projects, thereby generating further CO2 savings to be verified by DNV and speeding up decarbonisation efforts within the UK.
Stelrad’s head of marketing, Chris Harvey, says: “This is an exciting step for us to take towards greener manufacturing and fits in perfectly with our Group’s sustainability policy. The new Stelrad Green Series comprises of 60
28
horizontal models from our Green Compact range. The concept is already being well received by many of our customers who are keen to see more sustainable products being utilised in their homes and buildings. As well as the reduction in carbon emissions, no plastic will be used for the outer packaging either further increasing the sustainability claims of the product range – and of course, a radiator is 100% recyclable.”
Each radiator in the new range will bear a ‘Green Series’ radiator badge distinguishing them from the standard ranges and come with a green packaging label as well to make them stand out from the crowd.
The new radiators will come with a new identity and strapline – “Stelrad Green Series – Made with clean green steel”. Customers purchasing a green radiator from the new Stelrad Green Series will be saving the equivalent expenditure of driving a small car over 250 miles per radiator purchased. Stelrad offers the STARS Basic and Advanced Heatloss Programmes which contain an in- built U value calculator. You can save time and effort by using the Stelrad STARS programmes – a perfect solution for accurate radiator sizing and design flexibility to ensure that you are specifying and fitting the right sized radiator in a room, taking into account the correct building materials, the number, type and sizes of doors and windows, the type and quantity of insulation and the correct floor type. “Stock of the Green Series radiators will be available to order from March 2024,” says Harvey. “This is an important next step for us to provide products that are guaranteed to be lower in carbon emissions at every stage of their production and that all come with certificated guarantees as to the ‘green’
element certified by our partners Tata Steel who are also keen to be identified with the sustainability claims that go with the steel we use in these radiators. We believe that many of our customers are seeking ways of reducing their impact on the environment will welcome these ‘green radiators’ and incorporate them into their projects in the months and years ahead.”
Stelrad recognises that its success is built upon integrating business values and operations to meet the expectations of stakeholders.
