RISING STARS MEET THE FUTURE

Charlie Smith, marketing coordinator at NMBS tells Will McGill what she likes about the industry.

What is your current role?

I am currently a marketing coordinator at NMBS. My job involves everything marketing, but I have a heavy focus on all of our email communications and campaigns, I also contribute to our social media content output.

How did you get into the industry? I’ve found it’s a common trend that people don’t expect to end up in the construction industry, and that’s the same for me. I studied Nursing at University for a while, realised it wasn’t for me, and decided to completely change paths. I started looking at marketing apprenticeships, this is when I came across NMBS. I am so happy with where I am now, I wouldn’t change a thing.

What does a typical day for you at work look like?

My days really can vary, especially if we’re approaching an event such as the NMBS Exhibition. However, on a day-to-day basis I keep our supplier email campaigns up-to- date, create social media posts and ensure they go out on time, along with other tasks in between. I am always looking for new ways to improve the way we market NMBS, as well as our members and suppliers.

What are your big challenges in this role? One of the main challenges in my role is promoting the benefits of apprenticeships within the builder’s merchant sector. I am really passionate about apprenticeships and how they can benefit our industry, and conveying these positive messages to the wider sector and potential apprentices in an engaging way is something we’ve focused on in recent years.

What do you think your biggest achievement has been in this role? After passing my Marketing Apprenticeship and becoming marketing coordinator, I’d say my biggest achievement would be my involvement in NMBS’s Apprenticeship Campaign. I have carried out the full campaign over email and social media for the past year, as well as speaking publicly at events to help the industry know how beneficial apprenticeships can really be. We launched the campaign to commemorate our 60th anniversary with the target of

What would you like to achieve next? I would like to continue my work surrounding apprenticeships, helping merchants grow their businesses by investing their time into apprentices. I would also like to continue increasing NMBS’s social media presence, especially on LinkedIn, by pushing it to be even more of a key communication channel between ourselves, our members and suppliers. I believe social media really is the future, and I want to make sure we take full advantage of it.

What advice would you give to someone new to this industry?

Jump straight in! There are so many opportunities in this industry, grab them with both hands, while you can. I have learned so much in my short time in the industry, and taking advantage of every opportunity possible has really helped with this. Also, learn from others, I am continuously learning from other people within NMBS and the industry as a whole, no matter their area, there is always something new to learn.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hesitant when joining the industry, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Our industry is so much more than bricks and blocks; the opportunities are endless and the people are amazing.”

recruiting 60 Apprentices into the sector. We achieved this before the end of the year and we are continuing the campaign for years to come. I look forward to continuing my work and making a meaningful impact, which I am confident apprenticeships can have.

What would you say to someone who might be thinking about a career or getting a job in the merchant industry? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hesitant when joining the industry, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Our industry is so much more than bricks and blocks; the opportunities are endless and the people are amazing. Look at me standing next to a Mclaren at our 2023 NMBS show!

This industry is also looking for people to bring in new ideas so no one should be scared or worried to bring in fresh thoughts. The industry is forever changing and growing, and your small ideas can make a big impact.

Why do you think young people/women are hesitant to go into to industry? It is no secret that our industry is heavily male dominated, naturally this can make women hesitant to join the industry – and I was no different in this respect. It can be fairly daunting entering an industry where you have little representation, however I have learnt it to be a strength. There is so much space for women in this industry. The more women that join the industry: the more opportunities, different ideas and insights will appear – which benefits everyone. BMJ
