IOBM AND BMF AGREE MERGER IN A

MOVE designed to benefit the whole industry, The

Institute

of Builders’ Merchants (IoBM) is to merge with the BMF, to be separately managed and operate as a brand within the BMF. The merger will give the Institute access to wider resources whilst retaining its own management body. The new arrangement, which is effective from 1 May 2021, sees the assets, activities and membership of the IoBM transferred to the BMF, with the Institute then managed by a new Management Committee comprising the CEO and Membership Services Director of the BMF, the Chair and Vice Chair of BMF Young Merchants and two

existing Institute Board Members. All Institute Members will maintain their current membership grade upon transfer, subject to the payment of annual subscriptions. The IoBM Charity Trust, which provides grants to support the Institute and for training purposes, will continue to operate under the existing Trustees, with the BMF nominating two additional Trustees to assist.

Dave Saunders, President of the IoBM, said: “The Institute and the BMF have a common ethos around Training, Professionalism and Certification within the industry and I am delighted that we have agreed a joint way ahead. As a separately managed brand within the BMF, the Institute will remain open to all those employed within the industry and benefit from the surety provided by the greater

operational resources of the BMF.”

John Newcomb CEO of the BMF said: “This energising fusion of two aligned organisations serving the merchant industry will open up fresh opportunities, while maintaining the traditional values of the IoBM. The Management Committee together with the BMF Board has pledged to develop and publish a 3-5 year strategic plan during 2021, mapping the pathway for the Institute’s development. We look forward to a bright and relevant future for the Institute.” Richard Hill, Chair of the BMF Board, said: “The merger creates an exciting opportunity to build on the existing professionalism of the merchant sector, creating opportunities for colleagues at every level to study for a recognised certificate of personal development.”

BMF urges: Support the vaccination campaign

THE BMF IS throwing its weight behind a Government campaign to drive vaccine uptake across the UK. The Federation will be helping to spread the message amongst builders’ merchants and building materials manufacturers, urging them to encourage all colleagues to get the Covid19 vaccine when eligible.

The BMF is just one of the leading businesses, employer and industry bodies that have come together to support the biggest vaccination programme in the UK’s history. They will urge member companies to play their part and do everything they can to ensure colleagues are protected and get everyone back to work safely. BMF CEO, John Newcomb said: “The building materials community has been incredibly supportive of the NHS since the start of the pandemic, supplying

PPE equipment during the initial shortage and joining the BMF’s ‘Builders’ Merchants Supporting the NHS’ scheme to offer NHS workers discounts at local builders’ merchants.

“We are confident that our community will do everything it can to support the NHS once more by promoting vaccine uptake and making it as easy as possible for team members to attend appointments to get their jab.” Vaccine Deployment Minister Nadhim Zahawi said: “Thank you to all of the organisations which have joined this incredibly important campaign to promote vaccine uptake. “I call on every business in the UK, no matter how big or small, to join the national charge and help your employees to access life-saving jabs when they are eligible.” With more than 54 million

vaccines administered so far, people aged 38 and over are now eligible to get their Covid19 vaccine. Vaccinated people are far less likely to get Covid19 with symptoms. Vaccinated people are even more unlikely to get serious Covid19, to be admitted to hospital, or to die from it and there is growing evidence that vaccinated people are less likely to pass the virus to others.

New plastic packaging tax: April 2022

A NEW UK-WIDE tax on plastic packaging will come into force in April 2022 and apply to businesses that produce or import plastic packaging which does not meet a minimum threshold of at least 30% recycled content. Only packaging which is not predominantly plastic by weight will be excluded. Manufacturers and importers of less than 10 tonnes of plastic packaging per year will be exempt. The rate of tax is expected to be £200 per tonne. The construction industry creates approx. 50,000 tonnes of plastic packaging waste every year. Our supply chain uses a lot - mainly due to products being transported on pallets, shrink-wrapped, or bound with plastic straps, or with protective polystyrene - to prevent damage and ensure safe delivery. The challenge is this plastic is often discarded as soon as goods are unloaded or unpacked. A major BMF manufacturer is conducting trials to reduce by up to 30% the thickness of the shrink-wrap it currently uses on its goods. The HMRC has posted guidance online to help you prepare - for example, who will be liable; record- keeping and what exemptions will apply - https://www.gov. uk/government/publications/ get-your-business-ready-for-the- plastic-packaging-tax

We will update you when we have more information because the relevant laws have not yet been passed by Parliament. The proposals may be revised in debates and are subject to change. But we recommend that BMF members look at what plastic packaging you use now - and start to review what alternatives might be available and the cost implications for your business.
