BMF: A RENEWED COMMITMENT TO YOUTH

From tailored training courses to the Young Merchants Group and now the merger with the Institute of Builders Merchants, the Builders Merchants Federation is continuing to develop opportunities for younger members of the industry.

THE BUILDERS MERCHANTS Federation has long been known for its excellent industry-specific training and the recent merger with the Institute of Builders Merchants (IoBM) is set to provide further opportunities for younger members of the industry to develop learning pathways. From apprenticeships to management training and leadership development, there will continue to be a strong focus on supporting the next generation through on the job training and formal training courses. The ultimate goal is to help develop rounded professionals, but BMF support extends beyond traditional programmes.

For the past 30 years, the BMF Young Merchants Group has helped broaden the knowledge and build the confidence of those coming up through the ranks of their various merchanting and supplier businesses; with many forming enduring business relationships and friendships through the regular meetings which couple topical and informative presentations with social events. While there is a membership

process to join the BMF Young Merchants Group, which is restricted to those aged between 21 and 40 working for a merchant or supplier, the BMF Young Merchant Conference is open to all. This year’s YM Conference will be held at the NEC, Birmingham on 6 October during UK Construction week and will include a visit to the Build Show on site. In addition to a full day’s business programme the BMF

Young Merchant Conference features an evening social event at the Sky Loft within the Park Regis Hotel, Birmingham. As well as being informative in its own right, the Conference, with the theme Building the Next Generation, is designed to encourage, inspire and enthuse, making it an excellent introduction to the ethos of the BMF YM Group itself for anyone considering joining. Hosted by TV presenter and

garden designer, David Domoney, the Conference programme brings together leaders and experts both from our own industry or, like Nick Knowles and Oli France, from completely different walks of life. Knowles is the first to admit he is not a builder himself, but he does present one of the UK’s best loved building programmes. His show not only transforms lives, it also celebrates the spirit and professionalism of the building community including the many local trades, merchants and building materials suppliers that regularly support the programme.

France is an adventurer

and professional expedition leader who has spent the last decade embarking on intrepid adventures that have taken him through some of the world’s most dangerous and least visited countries, where he has faced spies, interrogators, minefields and arrest, not to mention killer snakes! His link to the building materials industry comes through his father, Tony France, formerly Sales Director at Ibstock and a BMF Board Advisor. By supporting the next

generation, the BMF is helping to build a pool of extremely talented young people within our industry. They are equally keen to recognise and reward their achievements, through the BMF Young Achiever Awards. Originally set up in 2013, this

year’s Awards will be presented at the BMF Annual Conference & Awards on 23 September. With two categories – one for those working for a BMF merchant member, the other for those working for a supplier/ service member – the Awards are open to anyone under 35 who has demonstrated an ability to go above and beyond, identifying new opportunities or implementing new concepts that benefit their business. Co-incidentally, one of the

previous BMF Young Achiever winners, Jo Callow of Knauf Insulation, is currently vice chair of the Young Merchant Group and will take over as chair at the Conference.

If you would like to support the young achievers in your business, be sure to book their place at the BMF Young Merchant Conference. And if there is someone within your business who has come up with and implemented a new idea or identified a new opportunity that has enhanced your business, make sure you recognise their contribution by entering them for a BMF Young Achiever Award for 2021.
