o west young man, they say. So, Grant & Stone did just that. When the independent builders merchant became part of the Cairngorm Capital private equity family in November 2019, it announced that that would be a springboard for further growth. Fast forward 18 months and the 29 branch merchant has become a 74 branch one, thanks to the acquisition, not only of fellow Home Counties company 3Counties, but south-west merchants CRS, Total Plumbing Supplies, Build It Gloucester and RGB.
One of the best things about this industry is the way that relationships forged over the years can lay the grounds for deals further down the line. Grant & Stone group managing director Peter Cudd has known RGB chief executive Kevin Fenlon for over 20 years. So, when the name of RGB started to be murmured amongst the corridors of Cairngorm Capital as a potential acquisition partner, Cudd felt comfortable with the idea.
