LOOKING AHEAD TO 2025 James Robinson, Samac Fixings sales and marketing director talks about how the company works with NMBS members.

2024 WAS a year of challenges for the merchant industry and its suppliers, but despite these, we have had a very successful year. Working with NMBS and its members has reinforced the value we place on those partnerships that support independent merchants.

Our success isn’t just about geographic reach – we have found our strongest relationships have been with independent merchants. These businesses, often family-run

and deeply rooted in their local communities, align with our ethos, so we made the decision to prioritise supplying independent merchants, a move that has defined Samac’s operations ever since. This exclusivity gives our merchant customers a distinct competitive edge. By offering products unavailable at national chains, independent merchants can avoid competing solely on price and instead focus on service, product range and local knowledge. This approach allows them to differentiate themselves and foster customer loyalty. This has been a really good move for us. Independent merchants excel at offering tailored services because they have such in-depth regional knowledge. This means our products are stocked by merchants who truly understand their customer base. Take roofing fixings, for example – a category where regional variations are key. The requirements in Yorkshire can differ drastically from those in Cornwall. Independent merchants’ expertise ensures customers find the exact products they need without the hassle of sorting through irrelevant options. This localised approach ensures the right solutions are used, no matter where the project is based.

As we move into 2025, several trends are shaping the fixings and fasteners market. Tradespeople and DIYers alike now expect high- performance coatings, powerful corrosion resistance and screws that work seamlessly across multiple materials.

Our Performance Exterior screws for example, blend strength, impressive weather resistance with a discreet finish. They come in two versions and two colours – double countersunk or pan head, silver or black. The pan head version prevents overtightening and cracking of softer materials but offers a strong hold across a broad surface area, making it ideal for brackets, clips and trim on fences, sheds and pergolas. The black version is ideal when the screw needs to blend into the background, perhaps in darker stains or painted wood. They are particularly useful for black uPVC gutter brackets, fence ironmongery and steel-framed structures where a countersunk screw wouldn’t be suitable. Stocking a mix of branded and own-brand products also remains a good strategy. Branded ranges, like our Performance Range, cater to professionals seeking high performance, while own-brand ranges provide cost-effective options for smaller trades or even DIYers who come into your branch. This balance allows merchants to appeal to a broader customer base and build loyalty.

Exclusively supplying the independent sector has allowed Samac to develop deeper partnerships, offer bespoke services and maintain a competitive edge. This strategy benefits merchants and helps strengthen local economies by encouraging customers to shop with their trusted local suppliers. As 2025 approaches, merchants and suppliers alike should consider the lessons of 2024: focus on partnerships, invest in innovation and leverage exclusivity to create value. By doing so, they can ensure a strong position in the ever-evolving fixings and fastenings industry. BMJ
