How BMF Ambassadors Help Diversify the Building Materials Sector
The sector is often seen as traditional and lacking diversity, BMF Ambassadors play a pivotal role in reshaping perceptions and fostering inclusivity within the building materials sector. By actively participating in initiatives like the Construction Inclusion Coalition (CIC) and its ‘Built on Better’ programme, ambassadors are vital in promoting a more diverse workforce that better reflects the communities they serve. Ambassadors engage with a wide range of audiences, including schools and colleges, to inspire young people from diverse backgrounds to consider careers in the building materials sector. This proactive outreach is essential, as many potential candidates may not see the sector as a viable option for their futures. By sharing personal stories, experiences, and insights about their roles, ambassadors can break down stereotypes and challenge misconceptions, making the industry more appealing to underrepresented groups.
Ambassadors play a
significant role in facilitating discussions around age diversity and gender balance. By highlighting the achievements of women and younger professionals in the sector, they contribute to creating role models who can inspire the next generation. BMF members brave storm for Scottish fundraiser
BMF members and guests who braved hurricane-force winds and torrential rain swept in by Storm Eowyn raised £8,500 for charity at the trade body’s annual Burns Night Supper on 24 January.

Night celebration, which commemorates the life and works of Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, is its biggest annual event in Scotland, held this year at Cameron House, Loch Lomond. Although the ferocious weather prevented a third of those expected from attending, the generosity of the 200 hardy revellers who managed to make their way to the venue meant the night’s fundraising exceeded last year’s total. The money raised will
be split between the BMF’s Charities of the Year – Variety, the Children’s Charity and The Educational Frontier Trust (TEFT). John Newcomb, BMF CEO said: “Once again the BMF’s Scottish region has organised a fantastic event. Thanks to sponsors Velux, Azpects, Brett Martin, Fakro GB, Garador, K Rend and SIG for their generous support, and to everyone who braved Scotland’s worst storm in a decade to help raise such a fantastic sum for the BMF’s charities.”
