TIMBER B
SW Group has revealed plans to invest millions in its operations at Melton, near Hull, expanding its footprint and enhancing capabilities at its BSW Timber Solutions and Bayram Timber sites. The move includes the addition of a third site, substantial IT upgrades, and increased production capacity.
The investment will deliver significant benefits to the group’s operations and customers alike. A key component of the expansion is the development of a new seven- acre site, which will house a cutting-edge treatment tank with a capacity of 100,000m³ per annum. This addition will bring the total production capacity across the three Melton sites to almost 250,000m³ annually. Bruce McKay, managing director of BSW Timber Solutions, says the plans represent a major milestone for the business: “We are delighted to announce these exciting plans for investment and expansion, setting us up for ongoing success. This isn’t just about increasing our production capabilities—it’s about reinforcing our position as a trusted partner to our customers and ensuring we deliver the best possible solutions.” The Group’s existing Melton sites span 37 acres and already include a diverse range of timber processing facilities. By integrating a third site into the mix, it aims to create a seamless operation capable of meeting the needs of a growing market.
Transforming operations BSW is also investing in its IT infrastructure. This initiative will unify all BSW Timber Solutions businesses, including Bayram Timber, onto a single platform, ensuring greater efficiency and scalability across operations. “A modern IT platform is essential for staying competitive in today’s market,” McKay explains. “By integrating our systems, we’ll be able to streamline processes, respond to customer needs more quickly, and position ourselves for future growth.”
The enhanced IT system will also improve communication between the Melton sites and the group’s sister plants in Europe, allowing BSW to take full advantage of its position within the Binderholz Group. As Europe’s largest timber processor, Binderholz offers a wealth of resources and expertise, which BSW is now bringing to the UK market. The Bayram Timber site, a key part of the Melton business for over 20 years, will also benefit from this investment. Bayram will gain access to Binderholz’s engineered timber products, including Cross-Laminated Timber and Glulam.

flexibility and capability,” McKay says. “We can now offer a complete suite of products that cater to virtually every need, from DIY and home improvement to specialised projects. The ability to combine bespoke timber solutions with cutting-edge engineered products is a real game-changer.”
To further integrate operations, the trading assets and liabilities of Bayram Timber will be merged into BSW Timber Solutions in April 2025. However, McKay says that day-to-day operations at both businesses will remain unchanged.
Community commitment The investment in Melton will not only boost production but also create new jobs in the region. BSW Group already employs nearly 250 people across its Melton sites, and this number is set to increase with the expansion. McKay highlights the company’s commitment to supporting the local community: “We’re proud to be a significant employer in the region and to contribute to the local economy. This investment demonstrates our dedication to the area and our belief in its potential for growth.”

BSW’s community support efforts extend beyond employment. The group actively engages with local initiatives through its community support committee, ensuring its presence in Melton benefits not only its employees but also the wider community. Recent upgrades at the sites have already reduced carbon emissions, with diesel generators replaced by electricity and LED lighting installed to improve energy efficiency. “Our commitment to sustainability runs through everything we do,” he explains. “From reducing emissions at our sites to planting millions of trees, we’re constantly looking for ways to innovate and make a positive impact.”
As BSW Group integrates its Melton businesses, it remains focused on identifying additional opportunities for growth and investment. While the current plans represent a significant step forward, McKay says there is more to come: “This is an exciting time for BSW Group, but it’s just the beginning. We’re constantly exploring new ways to expand, innovate, and deliver value to our customers. Additional investment projects will be announced in due course.” BMJ
