What’s your role?
My role is to drive our eCommerce strategy, internally with the Commercial Team and the wider business and externally with our Web and Digital Agencies.
How did you get into this industry? I came from a Graphic Design background but wanted to focus more on the digital side of things. When I saw a role come up at Howarth Timber which was digital marketing based I jumped at the chance to start working client side and be able to really delve into the business.
What might a typical day for you at work be? Ensuring everything we’re doing is staying on strategy and we’re not focusing on things that aren’t going to drive our objectives forward. This is a mix between liaising with our web agency and digital agency, working on SEO with our internal team, internal and external digital marketing plans and internal meetings.
What were you doing at work last week? Last week was spent taking forward action points and discussions which were had in our internal Marketing Meeting the previous week, along with a session on Behavioural Economics which was really interesting! The end of the week I attended our annual Managers Conference, which was in York this year. We had presentations given from across the company and a talk by Paul McVeigh which was really interesting and gave us plenty of food for thought.
What are your big challenges in this role? The biggest challenge in this role is the fact that this industry is so different to all other industries. Our core customer base – the trade – are currently happy purchasing from us in the same way that they always have, which is unusual. It’s important that we accept this and manage our expectations regarding what we expect the trade to use our website for and anything we do offer them has to have a real business benefit to them.

industry. Those individuals whose managers have pinpointed as regularly going above and beyond.
Job title: eCommerce Manager Company: Howarth Timber & Building Supplies
What do you love about your role? Digital is always throwing up new challenges. It’s diverse and ever changing so you have to stay on your toes, learn and adapt. There’s always new research and new ways to do things. I find the psychology side of user experience alongside analytics really interesting.
What do you think has been your biggest achievement so far in your role?
Getting the website to where it is today! Increasing sales year on year. I’m very proud of myself and my team for what we’ve achieved so far, and for the strategy and ideas we have to drive eCommerce even further within the business.
What would you like to achieve next? To see more engagement online from the Trade. I’d like to see the trend rising and integrating online into their normal working day lives.
What advice would you give someone new to this industry?
The knowledge and experience of others in this industry is your best resource. Take your time to network and get to know others in the business and industry in general as they are gold! I’ve learnt so much just by listening, asking questions and getting the right mentor.
What would you say to someone who might be thinking about a career/getting a job on the merchant industry?
It’s an industry I never guessed I’d be in, but the diversity of products and people you’ll meet are really what set the merchant industry apart.
What are the changes you foresee the industry making in order to survive the future? Be open to change. The internet isn’t the enemy and can be integrated into any business, “multi-channel” is the key word. It’s just about giving customers options. If you don’t give them options, they’ll go to someone who does. BMJ
