MKM opened in 1995, when founder David Kilburn faced redundancy at nearly 50 years old. Instead of slowing down, he teamed up with friend Peter Murray and opened a builders merchant in Hull with no yard, no credit accounts and just six people. Every order back then was celebrated with the ring of a fire bell.

In 1996, MKM opened its second branch in Driffield, led by Geoff Ulloytt, who had previously worked with Kilburn. Instead of simply hiring a manager, he was offered something different – a stake in the branch. That was the foundation for MKM’s growth, with every branch led by local Branch Directors, who know and understand their local area. The company has continued to expand across the country, on this basis, with a small number of acquisitons where appropriate. The latest branch is on Dallow Road in Luton, which opened at the end of March. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the company launched the MKM Foundation, a new charitable foundation created to strengthen the business’s long- standing commitment to local communities across the UK.

The MKM Foundation will provide a more joined-up way to support national and local causes, while still giving branches the freedom to fundraise, donate and volunteer in ways that matter most to their local communities. In its first year, the MKM Foundation will support three chosen charities, alongside the hundreds of community initiatives already led by MKM branches nationwide. The organisations supported in the Foundation’s first year are Macmillan Cancer Support, Pancreatic Cancer UK and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The charities were selected through a nomination and voting process involving MKM colleagues and the families of much-loved team members who have sadly passed away in recent years. The MKM Foundation will also provide funding to support smaller, local causes.
