comment NICK O’MAHONY, Sales Executive of Burton McCall based at Beaumont Leyes in Leicester On The Move
What’s your working week like? Very busy. Life on the other side of the fence has not given me a spare minute so far. New colleagues, new customers, new brands… never a dull moment!
Where were you? My previous role was with [former cookshop chain] Steamer Trading. After working with them for five years I worked my way up the ladder to Head of Retail. I stayed in this position for the final year of my time with the company, and found them to be a splendid group of people who worked tremendously hard to deliver for a business that they cared passionately about.
And how did you get there? During my early career, I spent a good number of years at [former cookshop chain] Peter Maturi & Sons, based in sunny Yorkshire. It was actually where I cut my housewares teeth! Being there taught me an incredible amount about the industry and brought me into contact with many of the good folk within it. With the exception of accounts, I think I was involved with pretty much every aspect of that business. Fine times.
And where are you now? I recently joined Burton McCall as a sales executive for the North and Midlands area, coupled with responsibility for specific key accounts.
Tell us a bit about Burton McCall. As part of the Bollin Group, which is a family company (there’s a theme here somewhere), we market and distribute premium outdoor and housewares brands within the UK. Based in Leicester, we have an extremely
strong team of people who are passionate about what they do and who have been very supportive to me since I joined. I’m finding it to be a great learning curve working within a team which is so loyal to the company - some of them have been here for over 10-15 years.
What will you miss? Great colleagues. And my network of specialist coffee shops throughout the south of England…
What won’t you miss? Pound for pound, I’ve always enjoyed what I’ve done.

What’s keeping you busy? Trying to bring a different perspective to the role, looking at how the experiences and interests I have can add value to it. And Mohamed Hajat [Burton McCall’s Head of Sales - Home, Garden & DIY]!
What’s on your agenda? Helping to transition our brands into new environments, learning more about our existing ones, and bringing in my knowledge and experience where I can.
“I never thought 10
years ago that the world of independent retail for housewares would alter as radically as it has”
What’s been the biggest change since you became involved in the housewares industry? It’s not a new statement, but the incredible changes on the high street. I never thought 10 years ago that the world of independent retail for housewares would alter as radically as it has.
What’s been the biggest achievement of your career? Playing a part in helping others progress. I like to think that the people I supported or

promoted paid me back many times over with their efforts. I’ve been very lucky in that sense.
High point of your career? Being in a leadership role in two fabulous businesses.
And the low point? Realising that a job for life is not something easily found in housewares retail anymore.
Which housewares retailers do you most admire and why? Past and present: my previous employers, Kitchens, David Mellor, Labour and Wait. A devotion to product with all of them, but also having that critical (and hard earned) housewares knowledge that comes from being genuinely engaged with what you do.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the housewares industry? People work with people. I’ve been lucky enough to have had some great mentors during my time in housewares, and they taught me the value of positive working relationships. I’m already certain that this will continue through the next chapter with Burton McCall.
What do you do to relax? I have two very active sons so family time very much revolves around them. As luck would have it, the rugby club they play for happens to serve an excellent pint of Guinness.
