clothes airers, whilst heated products were up 30% in March 2018 versus March 2017. The cold weather in February also prompted a surge in sales of one of Lakeland’s most popular sellers: washing-up gloves that also moisturise your hands. Then came the heatwave. Whilst sales of slow

cookers soared in December, they dropped dramatically in July 2018 - but sales of the Cobb barbecue were up 29% on the year before. As temperatures rose in July, putting England on

course for the hottest summer on record, sales of Lick and Sip Reusable Lolly Makers surged, with sales up 72% on 2017. Reusable ice cubes were popular too, with sales up 29% compared with 2017, and sales across all ice cube-making products were up in 2018. The summer also appeared to have caused a bumper crop of creepy-crawlies; sales of spider catchers were up 69% in September compared with August.

The clean scene As the report notes, there is a downside to cooking and baking food: having to wash up. Nearly half of us (46%) clean our kitchens daily or every other day. A small number (6%), however, do this task just once a month. And 4% admit to cleaning their kitchens a mere four times - or less - each year. Those living in the north-west are the country’s most scrupulous scrubbers, with 37% saying they clean their kitchen every day compared with the national average of 28%. Londoners and those living in the south-east are ‘the most slatternly’ with only 24% cleaning daily. When asked to name the worst chore, there was

one very clear answer: cleaning the oven. Six in 10 people (59%) said scrubbing inside this appliance was the task they hated most. Those aged over 55 particularly loathe this job, with 68% naming it as the worst cleaning task, compared with 42% of those aged between 18 and 24.

One in 12 people (8%) named cleaning the floor,

followed by one in 13 (7.5%) saying changing the bins was the duty they dreaded. Again, there was a split across the ages: those aged 55 and over don’t mind changing the bins at all, with just 3% naming it their worst job. But 20% of those aged 18 to 24 said emptying the bins was their worst job.

Favourite gadget When respondents were asked to name their favourite kitchen gadget, the slow cooker was top of the pops, named by 19% of those who have used one as their ‘most essential kitchen gadget’. stood out: the fondue set. Six in ten owners of this bit of kit said they had left it languishing in the back of a cupboard. But, the report says: ‘It’s time to dust it off! The fondue is enjoying a comeback.’

The rise of the microwave You’re more likely to own a microwave than a landline telephone in 2018, according to the report. Microwave ovens were first developed in 1946 in America, but it took a whole generation for Brits to embrace them. Now, 84% of people say they have one. Microwaves can now be used to poach an egg,

steam some veg, cook an omelette, make a crispy toastie, or even to bake a vegan cake in a mug. But what do most people actually use their

microwaves for? A total of 79% said they use it for heating up food, followed by 73% using it to cook ready meals and 66% using it to defrost frozen food. Just 36% use it to cook raw ingredients.

15 years ago this month in Housewares Magazine…

• Housewares and hardware chain Robert Dyas opened its first out-of- town store: a 5,000sq ft unit in Bournemouth.

• Details of a new exhibition - the New York Gourmet Housewares Show, set to launch in October 2004 - were unveiled by George Little Management.

• A group of private investors led by turnaround specialist Peter Ford bought Poole Pottery out of administration.

• Housewares Magazine travelled to Belfast and declared Captain Cooks Homestore as the winner of its Mystery Shopper survey of the Northern Ireland capital’s housewares retailers. Thanks to outstanding customer service, the shop beat Bullicks, SpoilsHome, Hanna & Browne, Debenhams and Equinox.

• Morphy Richards launched a £1.5 million TV advertising campaign to promote its Filter Rapide range of water filters, featuring a voiceover by actress Amanda Burton.

• Brooke House Exhibitions, the organiser of London trade show Exclusively Housewares, announced that exhibitor space at the 2004 event was fully booked – and that for the first time since the show’s launch in 2001, there were over 100 exhibitors (107 against 96 in 2002).

• Supplier KitchenCraft topped Housewares Magazine’s annual Best of Best Sellers report for 2003, followed by Typhoon, Grunwerg, Horwood, Dexam, JWP, ICTC, Meyer, Brabantia and Silverwood.

• Fissler Magic stainless steel utensils, ScanPan frypans, SKK cookware, Grunwerg MinoSharp Plus knife sharpeners, JWP Lock & Lock storageware and WMF salt and pepper mills were the best-selling housewares products at Arcade in Llandysul, Chilli Peppers Cook Shop in Louth, David Shuttle Cookshop in Beaconsfield, Loose’s Cookshop in Norwich, Malletts Home Hardware in Truro and McPhersons in Inverurie respectively.
