CaseStudy

Grade I listed St Paul’s Cathedral is subject to strict regulations, prohibiting alterations without special permissions. The well-known cathedral’s existing heating system consisted of three steel shell boilers, fi tted in the 1960s, which received a burner upgrade in the 1980s. Problems with the equipment occurred and were fi xed until the boilers

fi nally started leaking, could not be repaired anymore, and hence, needed replacement. The cathedral required reliable and energy effi cient boilers to meet its high heating and hot water demand, while at the same time keeping the running costs down. To avoid changing the fl ues, the cathedral initially planned to replace the

older system with pressure jet steel shell boilers. However, Robin Bunton from Bunton M & E Services, who chose and installed the boilers and water heaters, recommended Hamworthy’s Wessex ModuMax mk3 condensing modular boilers to meet the reliability and energy effi ciency requirements, as well as compliance with current legislation to eliminate ineffi cient boilers. Two of Hamworthy’s Wessex ModuMax space saving modular condensing boilers (1,016kW combined output) were chosen. Backed up by a 10-year warranty and fi tting through a standard doorway, they provided the installation fl exibility required for St Paul’s Cathedral. To meet the hot water requirements, especially during the peak demand of the summer months when tourist groups arrive, two Powerstock calorifi ers with a capacity of 500 litres each, and a quick recovery time of 18 minutes, were chosen.

Brief company history

Hamworthy Heating is a British manufacturer with a heritage of high quality engineered products. Since 2008, Hamworthy has been part of Groupe Atlantic and is now part of their growing UK division, Groupe Atlantic UK & ROI.

Mr Bunton commented: “We have used the Wessex boilers since they

were introduced and know they are a very reliable product. They are space saving and great in refurbishment projects and buildings where you can’t change the building fabric, such as St Paul’s. “The speed of heat up has greatly improved. Previously it would take a week to heat the cathedral up from cold, but now it only takes one day.”
