provide a simple reference point to link both wellness and sustainability in commercial buildings, to achieve best practice. Wellbeing is not “new” but it’s only in recent times that we have begun to fully

appreciate the benefits it can bring. Research has proven that “well” employees are happy, healthy and committed, likely to be more loyal to their organisation and willing to go that extra mile. What’s more, productivity and creativity will rise amongst well individuals, which can only be good news for business owners. As I see it, this is the new generation of wellness intervention and smart

employers should factor wellbeing into the heart of their business culture. Organisations which look after their staff will naturally be more appealing to work for and will also find it easier to retain employees.

User-control

A common complaint from occupants of buildings is that they have little, or no control over their working environment. Commercial buildings are continuously becoming more sophisticated, so it’s logical to expect buildings to be intelligent and adapt to the needs of individuals. Building controls are integral in meeting the growing wellbeing demands. A Building Management System (BMS) controls the critical environmental system for HVAC and generates large and continuous volumes of real time data on the performance of the building and the behaviour of the people within. This data can then be analysed, allowing building managers to accurately

predict conditions and adjust the environment to suit the needs of individuals, such as detecting changes in indoor air quality which can have an adverse effect on wellbeing and performance. Furthermore, issues can autonomously be fixed, or over time they can automatically adjust accordingly.

Flexible approach

Personal preferences such as thermal comfort and air quality can all be monitored and altered with the use of innovative building controls. Workplaces which have good ventilation, clean air and adaptable temperature solutions have been proven to dramatically improve cognitive functions of occupants. However, this should come as no surprise to us. No two people are the same,

so why would we expect individuals to work to their optimum performance if the conditions are not suitable? A survey conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Directors (CIPD) found that fewer than one in 10 (8%) of UK organisations have a standalone wellbeing strategy with many relying on one-off initiatives instead. It’s imperative that organisations identify solutions which not only continue to

improve the energy efficiency of the building itself, but also promote productivity of the occupants inside too. The perception of company culture is what will entice new people on board during the recruitment process. Bosses have a duty of care to their staff; therefore, looking after the needs of individuals will go a long way in providing a sustainable and successful future for the building controls industry.
