Why monitoring will determine the success of heat pumps in social housing

T
he UK’s social housing sector is leading the transition to low-carbon heating. Housing associations manage 2.9 million homes for
around six million people in England alone, with many investing heavily in heat pumps as part of their decarbonisation programmes. Installing those systems, however, is only half the challenge. The real test is whether they continue to perform as intended once the installer has left site. Too often, problems only come to light when
a resident complains that their home isn’t warm enough or their bills are higher than expected. By that point, systems may have been running inefficiently for weeks or even months. Without visibility of what is happening inside the home, installers and housing providers are effectively working blind. That is why remote monitoring is fast becoming a critical part of heat pump deployment.
Social housing brings unique operational pressures
Social landlords are managing increasingly complex heating portfolios across large, geographically dispersed estates. In practice, that often means multiple manufacturers, each with their own monitoring platform - if one exists at all. Installers are left switching between systems just to understand how their portfolio is performing. At the same time, tenant liaison officers often
become the first point of contact when residents have questions about their heating, even though they are not technical specialists. That creates a fragmented support chain where relatively small issues can escalate into avoidable site visits simply because no one has clear visibility of system performance. A single, consistent view of all installations changes that fundamentally.
From reactive to proactive maintenance

Monitoring is only as good as the control behind it
Of course, monitoring depends on the quality of the data being collected. Just as importantly, it generates the operational data that makes meaningful monitoring possible in the first place.
Seeing the whole picture Few housing providers are dealing with a single
brand of heat pump. More often, estates include a mix of manufacturers installed over several years and programmes. Without a unified system, understanding overall performance becomes slow and inconsistent. A single dashboard that monitors performance
provides that missing overview. It allows installers and landlords to compare performance across properties, identify recurring issues, prioritise maintenance and track whether systems are delivering expected efficiencies over time.
Building confidence in low-carbon heating
The UK’s Net Zero goals depend on technologies like heat pumps working well at scale – not just being installed but actually performing reliably in everyday homes.
That means the industry must get two things right at the same time: the technology itself, and how it is experienced by the people living with it. Heat pumps are still relatively unfamiliar to many residents, and that can easily shape perception if something doesn’t feel quite right with the heating or running costs. Having visibility of how systems are operating helps close that gap. It allows installers and housing providers to show that systems are working as intended, and to step in early when they are not. Just as importantly, it helps shift the conversation
away from uncertainty and towards confidence in low-carbon heating, something that will be essential if these technologies are to be adopted at the scale required to meet national Net Zero targets.
